Magi 11 has re ccived the appoiutment ol Collector of the War Tax for thin Diatiict, ami Mr. William Robertson the appointment of Chief Assessor. The rains iu this vicinity have been abundant for I he last two weeks. On Sunday there was a heavy storm of rain at this place?the heavii est, uv uu, m>i '" ? imicii me present year. it.e crops, generally, are ill flourishing condition. The intelligence, thiough Northern sources, of the advance of our army into Maryland and Pennsylvania, is highly importaut. The North seems to he in a furor ol excitement, uot un< mingled with consternation ; and it is to be hoped that they will soon be made'to taste of that bitterness of Invasive warfare which they have pressed to4he lips of the Southern people. The Second Labor Division, iu which Is embraced the District of Lancaster, is agaiu called upon to furnish one.fourth of the negros, liable to road duty, to labor on the fortifications near Charleston, for thirty days. Shannon, published on another column. \W The notice of the Ladies Kniertainment, for Friday evening next, appears agaiu in to* day's paper, slightly altered as regards the terms of admission. Those of our readers who can attend, should do so, iu anticipation of a most iuteicsting performance. The Programme, wmcn we nave been permitted to , contains some sixteen different scenes ; and these are iutarsperaed with Charades and a number of (he most popular song* and duetts. Such a Programme, with such performers as our I.an. caster ladies have hitherto proveu themselves to he, cannot fail to be highly entertaining. Roll of Honor. Mr. V. O. DeFonUine announces the preparation of "South Carolina'i Roll of Honor"?a volume whose design is to perpetuate the name of every soldier son of the State who has fallen by disease or in battle during the war. In furtherance of this .undertaking, the request is tuade of every family who have been thus afflicted, to send promptly to F. G. DeFontaine, Spartanburg, S. C., a biief biographical sketch of the deceased, embiacing name, age, place of birth, occupation, regiment and company, and incidents of liattle or attending death, aud especially such dying declarations as may reflect the character of the patriot and hero. Troopa for Local Defence. t We publish hi this paper '.he Proclamation from Got. Ilonham, with accompanying order* from the Adjutant and Iuapector General, in relation to the new levy and organization of troopa for local delence, under a rw<|uiiilion from President Davis. It appear* that the president haa called upon all of the State* for a portion of their reaerre force, or militia, to be organized for duty in their respective States, for the period ol six months from the let of August next. The object of this call is doubtless U) guard against the destructive system of raids which our unscrupulous loe hat inaugurated against us, and that the forces now in the field may be masted for active operations against the enemy. The number of prisoners taken was fully 7,000; from two to tbree thousand horses, and an immense number of wagous. The Yankees have entirely disappeared from Stafford County. Before the capture of Winchester, Milroy notified the rebels that he would burn the -town it an attempt was made to storm the position. Kwell replied that he would hang every Yankee captured. The following diapetchea were reeeired from Camdeo on Monday evening : The only newa we here from our army of Virginia is derived from the N. Y. Herald of the 18th. It says the rebels have retreated from Ohauibersburg, but are in strong force at Williamsport. 601) of Yankee cavalry were captured by the rebels near Greencastle. Har per's Ferry has been evacuated, but the Maryland Heights are strongly fortified and yet in the possession of the Yankees. Hooker's army was near the old Bull Hun battleground on the 16th. The fortifications constructed on the hills opposite Ifarrisburir are eonsideretf anffi. cient to defend the place, but the people ate disposed to underrate the danger of the ci.ty. Not content with wresting peaceful citizens from their houses ami confining them in loathsome dungeons, and with seizing our contented slaves and inhumanly placing them in military organizations, to be shot down j, in the front of'battle, they hare inaugurated a system of raids into the interior of the States, stealing negioes, burning cities and farms, destroying live stock and growing crops and spreading desolation everywhere in their trnck. To meet this condition of things, and to render practicable greater concentration of our forces already in the field and afford adequate internal protection to the States, the President of the Confederacy deems it expedient to call for a portion of their reServe force for service with I in tin ir respective limit*.
