The McKenna Will Case
This ease, which tins attracted so inucli
attention tluough the country, has recently
been sejtlcd by compromise between tlie
parties. The whole Estate, according to
the terms o.f settlement, after the payment
of debts due by Testator, .certain of the ley
aeies and annuities under the Will, tax, costs
and incidental expenses of suit and settlement,
is apportioned as follows: To Mrs
Ellen McKennu (widow) tv\o eights, absolutely.
To Rev. N. IV I.yuch 1). I), Hishop
pf .Chatleston, in trust for the objects contemplated
iu the Will, three-eights,. To
Geo W Williams, iu trust for the use of
the contestants I. F. G. Mittag and wife
Anna, nnd not subject to the marital rights j
of the former, the remaining three-eighths. |
The Estate is variously estimated to be
i worth from two to three hundred thousand

The Cenlr&i Railroad.
The Sumter Walchmir.i of last week reports
that the surveyors, engaged in making j
the preliminary survey of the proposed j
South Carolina Central Railroad, passed j
that place, on the route, the week previous.
Col. T. U- j'Vftser, of Sumter, introduced '
in the lower branch of the Legislature on
the 30th ult, a liill to incorporate this road, j
with a capital stock of 50.000 shares, at j

Small Fox in Columbia
It Iuih been announced that small pox
prevails to some extent in our State Capitol.
Private information received at tins

President Buchanan and becession.
It seems now to be well under stood tin. I
President Buchanan does not ndmit the
right ol'a State to secede from the Federal
Uniup, arid in this position is sputmned by
a part of his Cublnct. But while h? de< {
nicy thp right pf secession, he doubts the j
expediency or practicability of resorting to
coercion. It is believed that hi* forth-cftming
Message will indicate these view* anil
that be will submit the whole subject to
the direction of Congress. Congress convened
on Mouduv last and the Message
wna probably announced yesterday. No
I similar document w as perhaps ever looked I
for with so great interest by the whole
country.
The Crisis at the North.
Whatever inconvenience and danger to |
to (hp South, the praaent secession movement
may engender, it is not comparable '
with the consternation and peril which the j
| same cause in likely to produce upon the j
people of the North. The partiul cessat jon
of communication between the twQ8e?iion* '
have already pfoduped the most startling
effects. Hankers nnd Merchants are break:
ing at every turn, and the prospect is that j
I the entire Hankino svstein of tl?? Nh.rili
will be smashed. Manufacturers are din- j
I missing thpir operatives by thousands. A
correspondent of the Charleston Courier,
j writing from New York, reports that twelve '
thousand were dismissed in that and the *
| neighboring cities of Newark and Ne\y lla |
veil in one day. These hirelings are turned
out upon society with nothing in their packets
wherewith to support themselves and
I families. In it to be presumed that they t
will quietly Ije down and starve ? No, not
I as long on thpfe is bread jn the country,
arid we tuny expect to hear within a shoit
I time of as terrible scenes at the North an
Mas ever enacted in France, (iod grant '
Unit it may teach the abolition fanatics n
lesson M'hioh they nor posterity may never
forget
The Mouth is in far less danger of ciyi|
war and insurrection than the North is of
