The city of Knoxville contain* a population
of over six thousand, is situated on
' the right bank of the HoNton River, four
miles below the junction with the French
Broad and Abjtit the same distance above
lire confluence of the Clinch -River. It is
at the head of steamboat navigation : contains
the Kaat-Tenncssee College, and also
an Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb. Knoxville
was once the seat of government of
this State, r.nd the Constitution of tho
Stato formed at this city. Tho city seems
to be improving rapidly,'fine and expensive
'buildings have and arc now being erected,
the vnlne of all real estate has increased
wonderfully and astonishingly since the
completion of the rail road. The city now
has rail road connections with Savannah
and Charleston, Richmond, Petersburg and
Norfolk, nnd the rest of the world.
1 see the farmers arc now engaged in
(plowing in their stuWile fields, with large
*tvo horse tplotvs. The.plowing was well
Jone and looked'iike It would pay.
Among the notables who reside in this
*eity,'inny be M entioned "Sut Lovengood."
''1 inquired for him and was first told he was
absent but have since been informed he
was in the city. I saw him last year, but
then he had not acquired such notoriety,
and didn't notice him so us to know him
again.
On coming from the Depot to the Hotel,
I found the strrets full of persons, and
soon lenrned the cause, Mabie'a Circus and
Menagerie was in tins city, a band of musio
drawn by three Elephants was on exhibition,
and the city and country were out not
to see the 'Elephant,' but 'three Elephants'
iti harness. I am comfortably quartered at
the "Hell I louse" kept by Mr. Lanier. It is
a good bouse, nnd he is an exceedingly kind
and obliging landlord. He is sorter a Lincaster
tn:?n. ami has several relations in our
District.
I spent quite a pleasant evening at the
residence of Mr. McFnrland, with his kind
and agreeable family. He is the half brother
of our townsman Mr. Mayer. Tomorrow
I leave for Mont V ile Springs.

place is about 25 miles. The Muntvnlu
Springs are situated near the Western base
of the Chilliowce mountains in Mount
county, the elevation above the level of the
sea is said to be near 1400 feet. The valuable
properties of the waters have long
been known to persons residing in this vicinity.
It is said, that the Cherokee Itidi ans
before the country was settled by the
white's, knew of this Spring and made annual
encampments in the neighborhood for
the purpose of drinking the waters. In
1850 a Col. Watson travelling for his health
heard of their remarkable efficacy in Chronic
Diarrhea and Dyspepsia, under winch he
had suffered for years, visited them, became
fully restored and purchased the Springs
and farm, and erected a commodious hotel
ami other buildings |?r the accommodation
of ' isitors. Since then the place has be?
' rente a favorite and popular icsort for invalids,
and also for the seekers of pleasure
and amusement. The analysis of the water
has bcou made by Professor Mitchell,
of the Kast Tennessee University, and conI

and related of the permanent cures of persons
