Counterfeit Money.
Among the odd ite.ns given in the annual
report of the American Trnct Society
there is one to tiie effect that during the
pest yesr that institution received not lees
tlun tOtS, 10 in broken nnd counterfeit
hills,through the contribution bo*. There
ie something really singular in the idea of
giving counterfeit money for such a purIKjee,
and it is l>oine out in other matters,
leggara in the streets and hand organists
are said to receive more counterfeit money
tban any other persons, while we have
heard that at one time, subscriptions to our
leading literary magazines, especially
when remitted from the West, contained
an almost incredible proportion of worthless
"wild cat" currency.
We can understand that a rascal can
deliberately issue a forged note and receive
value for it; wo can also understand that
a person, inspired by recklessness or ostentation,
could make some of those unusual
contributions to a church box, of which,
l-uttons, brail nails, and pieces of tobacco,
are popularly supposed to constitute the
greatest portion. As for cl ting editors,
that seems to come "by nature" to an incredibly
great number of men. Hut that
a man with any pretence to decency, or
who goes to church at all for any other
purpose save picking pockets, should give
to religion or to the poor a counterfeit note
is an anomaly which seems beyond explanation.
We presume that it results from a mixed
feeling of theft aud carelessness. Many
men, who would not for the world deliberately
pass ? counterfeit bll for va'ue received,
are still adverse to burning one.?
It looks so much like money, and they restuu.1

relation to practical and worldly benefit?,
as a counterfeit note doee to the solid
coin, and they consequently give the

they argue, "and inay do tome good; at
any rate let it go!"
How few there are among those who

very possibly prove a cause of imprisonment
to the innocent, of suspicion and of
tempt-tion to renewed guilt. Like every
wicked thought in print, it it capable of
'indirectly causing endiesa trouble, until it
is finally and utterly destrnred.
Let the next reader of these lin*a, who
gets a counterfeit note in hi* possession
destroy it without delay. Fire is the only
means ??f purifying such money.? Phila d.lphiu

The Si Loui? Herald say*:
"Just as the steamer Keyston was

their way to Kansas?some daring and
expert thief broke open Col. Hufo'd's trunk

the thief was on the boat and went

be discovered before they reach Kansas.
Intel igeuce of the robbery was

having lieen discovered until the Keystoua
