I sent my love a book one day, She brought it back. 1 laid it by ; 'Twas little either had to say? She was so strange and 1 so shy. But yet we loved indifferent things? The Bprouting buds, the birds in tune ; And time stood still and wreathed his wings With rosy links from June to Juno. For her, what task to dare or do ? What peril tempt? what hardships bear? And then it changed, I took the book Which she had read in days gone by, And as I rend such passion shook My frame, I needs must frown or cry. For here and there her love was writ In old half-fud6d pencil signs, As if she yielded, bit by bit. Her heart in dots nnd underlines. Ah, silvered fool! too Inle you look ! I know it; let me here record This maxim?"lend no maid a book Unless you read it afterward." It is related of David Crockett, that on bis arrival at Washington to, he heard Mr. Webster, and accosted him thus : "Is this Mr. Webster!" "Yes, sir." "The great Mr. Webster, of Massachusetts?" "I am Mr. Webster, of Massachusetts." "Well, sir," continued Mr. Crockett, "1 0.-1 - lumu mnt you were a great man, but I don't think to. I heard your speech and understood every word you said."
