The Book.
Uoder this title, F. S. Cozzens, author of
"Sparrow-grass Papers" in Putnam, contributes
to the Home Journal the following
facetious lines.
I sent my love a book one day,
She brought it back. 1 laid it by ;
'Twas little either had to say?
She was so strange and 1 so shy.
But yet we loved indifferent things?
The Bprouting buds, the birds in tune ;
And time stood still and wreathed his wings
With rosy links from June to Juno.
For her, what task to dare or do ?
What peril tempt? what hardships bear?
JP* But with her! ah, sho never knew
My heart, and what was hidden there !
And she with me, so cold and coy,
O? 1 IS I- - - !J * c. e
uTOmeu HHe <? uiaui ucren 01 sense;
But in a crowd nil lire mid joy,
And full of blushful impudence.
She married! well, a woman needs
A mate, her life r.nd love to share ?
And little cares spring up like weeds,
And played around her elbow chair.
And years rolled by, but I content,
Trimmed ray one Inmp and kept it bright,
Till age's touch my hair besprent
With rays nnd gleams of silver right.
And then it changed, I took the book
Which she had read in days gone by,
And as I rend such passion shook
My frame, I needs must frown or cry.
For here and there her love was writ
In old half-fud6d pencil signs,
As if she yielded, bit by bit.
Her heart in dots nnd underlines.
Ah, silvered fool! too Inle you look !
I know it; let me here record
This maxim?"lend no maid a book
Unless you read it afterward."
