NEW YORK CORRESPONDENCE.
To the Eo. op the LANCASTER LkDUEK. *"
Tuesday, 26th Sept., 1864. j
The whig* of the great State of New e
York made abort work of it at Syracuse; j,
end the contest is now narrowed down to j
the Sewerdiaed whigs and the two belli* ^
gvrant factious or the radical democracy, j,
unless, as may happen, a fourth ticket be ^
introduced into the field by the temperence
alliance which meets at Auburn on
the 27th instant. But we scarcely think
that a ticket will emiiiAt* from the tetn- ,|
perance men, inasmuch as the Whig can- ^
didate for Governor is a satisfactory Maine H
Law man : and consequently the only re j,
maining concern of the temperance people j
wilt be the election of a Tetotal Legisla- v
ture, But the Maine I.nw, or any other ^
law, *'s by no means ,4tho head and front" (]
eff the Syracuse platform, which is in reality
substantially the same as tho Sara- ,,
...
vg? uuiiuuu piauurm, looking to tlio ^
forinatiou of a groat anti slavery coalition v
party throughout the North, in open lion- e
tility to the South in tho campaign of 1856
"Free labor and free soil for all," is the fu- j,
IDW motto of the Whigs. B
But the subject that is by far thd most j
engrossing, at the present moment, is the ?
fact that the Ambassador SoulC has left ; j
Madrid. Although now denied by the | (
organs of the government, it was always (
believed that Mr. S>>ule had authority to
purchase Cuba. It would seem that be- |
fore the late revolution he flourished his
purse of $100,000,000 in the face of the
Minfstry in vain, and that on Esnartero'a
t
accession to power he renewed his solicitations
and "material" promises; but E?
partero would not listen to him. Indignant
at his want of success, he too tried
his hand at a revolution, ana according to
the Diario Esponol, got up a counter
revolution on the 28.h of last month,
failing in this also, he suddenly took his
departure; following in the footsteps ot
his illustrious predecessor. Queen Christitina.
On the whole, Mr. S^ule'a diplomatic
career has been unfortunate; but
eren yet, cool, why and diplomatic wise
as he really is, he may effect the purchase
of Cuba. In the mean time we Hre looking
anxiously forward for the next news
from Spain.
By the arrival of the Arabia, we have
received news from Europe to the morning
of the 9lh inst; as usual, however,
there is nothing new about the war. As '
winter in the North is rapidly advancing ^
the campaign of the Baltic may be said (
to be sudei for this year of our Lord.
The iuraoion too of the Crimea may still
be considered very problematical anil not- (
withstanding the proud boasts of the abed j
spite of the brilliant victories which she I
herself has achieved in Europe than she 'I
was on the opening of tlie campaign?
a campaign, in fact, which lias never in- '
j ured Russia nor benefitted Turkey.
The Emperor Napoleon, pleased with
the "jolly lime" he enjoyed with Prince
Albert, has determined to visit the king
cf Belgium. Preparations <>f no ordinary
character are being made for his reception
at Brussels. Perhaps before he bids ?
adieu to the Belgian Court it may enter
his imperial head to visit Waterloo. The
distance to the field is only a nice ride '
before breakfast, and there is no doubt he
would las able call up some very pleasant
reminiscences of "his uncle."
c
Our late City fathers are trembling in
their sh.ms?and tlirea en to prosecute

for libel if they should dare to publish the ?
results of the inquiry iuto the charires ot ..
corruption made against several members
of the late Board of Aldcrinen. Hut, alas !
they have no power now, and thixmunuel '
of the art of corruption will see the light "
before many days elupse. "
Lhiring the recent session of the Grand

which 1.113 were for violation of the t

Twenty months ago, we purchased a bill of

that it is much easier to purchase goods
in Charleston than in N. Y. and if is some

Cash vs. Credit.
We re.vd very sensible article in n late
number of tlie Greenville M.untaineer un
the above subject. We have come hi the
conclusion ourself. that if the credit system
be not restricted, it will ruin our people.
The en dit system in the upper country
prevails to a remarkable extent. If a man ^
w robes to buy a farm, a house and lot, a (
barrel of sugar or a year's subscription to
a newspaper, the first question he oaks is?
' How long will you credit lue f* Now.
wouictiincs, when uioney is as scarce ua it
liaa been the last six months, it is a matte"
of impossibility to pay casli for ^vsrything
but, it is an undeniable truth, that oftentimes
n man will request credit w hen he flas
ihe money in his ppeket, and no immediate
use for it. The system is productive of
every tiling which tends to our injury and
ruin. Bankruptcy is the sequel to this unlimited
credit system. In any store in our
own village, We feel satisfied that live dollars,
cash, will purchase as much, if not
more, than live dollars to he charged. This
is one advantage gained, another is, th .t
people will always buy less when tlicy piy
every time. Open an ucc? unt at a store,
and every day, it is u pound of pepper, a
box of this or a keg of that. Nor is this
all. when your account is made out you are
dtsj used ?o question the honesty of the
merchant?ipy w ife avers she did not get
this, and my daughter most positively asserts
she did not get that,?therefore bitter i
feelings are engendered, which may lead to
animosity and ?'rife. Again, your account
is presented to you whiil you are unprepared
to pay it?you give your note and *
probab y you are threatened, if not sued ut
the next Court ; this involves you iu more
expense, thai when it is paid olF, all you
have bought could have been purchased lor
u much less sum wiih the cash.
