Opium Smoking in China.
Bayard Taylor, in one of his letters from
' Canton to the Vew] York Tribune, gives the
following description of his first attempt to
smoke opium:
"In spite of the penalties attached to it by
Chinese law, the smoking of opium is scarce*
ly a concealed practice at present. I have
seen it carried on in open shops in Shanghai,
where there are some streets which are ncver
free from the sickening smell. It had always
been my intention to make a trial of
the practice, in order to learn its effects by
personal experience ; and being now on the
eve 01 leaving (Jhina, Applied to * gentleman
residing here to put me iu the way of enjoying
a pipe or two. II j was wall acquainted
with a Chiuara in who is addicted to tho
practice, and by an agreement with him,
took me to hie house 1 ist evening. We
were ushered into a long room, with a divan
or platform, nb ?ut three feet high at the
further end. Several Chin ttnuu were iu the
room, and one, stretched out on the platform,
was preparing his plpo at a lamp ?
The host invited me to stretch myftclf opposite
to him, and place my head upon one of
those cane head-stools which serve the Chinese
in lieu of pillows.
"The opium-pipn is a bamboo stick about
two feet long, having a small drum inserted
near the end, with an aperture in its centre.
A piece of opium, about twice the size of a
pin's head, is taken up on a slender wire
nna neia in tno mine of the lamp until it
boils or bubbles up, when it is rolled into a
cylindrical shape on the drum, bv the nid of
the wire. It loses its d irk color by the
heating and becomes nod soft. Having been
sufficiently rolled, it is placed over the aperture,
andtho wire, after being thrust through
its centre, to allow the air to pass info the
pipe, is withdrawn. The pipe is then held
to the flame, und ns the opium burns, its
fumes are drawn into the lungs by u strong
and long-continued inspiration. In about
half a minute the portion is exhausted, and
the smoker is ready for a second pipe"To
mv surprise I found the taste of the
drug us delicious ns it smell is disagreeable.
It leaves a deep rich flavor, like the finest
liquorice, upon tho palate, and the gentis
stimulus it communicates to the blood in
the luugs, fills the whole body with a sensation
of warinth end strength. The ftimea
of the opium are no more irritating to the
windpipe or bronchial tube", than comtuqa
air while they seem imbued with a richness
of vitality fur beyond our diluted oxygen.
I ha<l supposed that opium was smoked entirely
for the purpose of mental exhilaration,
and that to the smokers, an to many who in

* Beyond the fooling of warmth, vigor and
increased vitality; softened by a happy consciousness
of repose, there was no effect, until
after finishing the sixth pipe. My spirits
then became joyously excited, with s constant
disposition to laugh ; brilliant colors
flouted before my eyes, but in a confused

of July, instant, ANDREW RU8SEL
McDOW, of Lancaster district, in the 83d
year of his age.
'I he deceased hsAbfsn a sufferer from a
rsry early period dWis life. He had long
felt the pongs of suffering and uffliction, and
when death came he was not unprepared
for it. He met death with calmness and
ootuposure, nnd in a spirit of resignation ;
and his mind was clear and unclouded to the
last. He spoke rationally nnd physiologirally
about his disease in its progress to its
fatal termination, and when upon frim he
described the throes to his friends, nnd the
feelings which he experienced in passing
from this stage of action, nnd continued to
do so until s few moments before life was
extinct. His disease was of a complicated
character, and protracted severely for sevornl

young, hp, with his four brothers and sisters,
(all small c' ildren) were left under the sole
irfhnngemcnt and eontroi of his mother, who
fondly an I tenderly doted upon them, and
it might well be expected that he hnd u dangerous
road to travel, expo ?ed to the temptations
and hazurdsof life incident to youth
but amid all his deprivations, his course was
most fortunate and his conduct most correct,
lie steadily evinced a determination to do
his part towards fitting, himself for the business
of life and the discharge of duty. As
far as his limited means would permit, he
most industriously and pt-rsevcringly wsnlto
work to ncquire an education; and that he
might be instructed by the best teachers, he
incurred voluntarily, the expense of hoarding
and tuition from home. After having
finished his academical studies, he commenced
the study of medicine with his
brother, Dr. Robert McDow, and was most
industriously and closely engaged in its
study, when he was last placed upon the
bed of affliction. The deceased was remarkable
for morality and virtue?he w as strong
and decided in his attachments, and guiille- ,
manly in hit whole deportment. 'Temperance,
us a principle, was reecqfni?bil and practices
by him, and suffering humanity found
a ready friend in him. lie Was a member
of the temperance association at the time of
hU death.
He has left a mother, and brothers and
sis tars who deeply feel and mourn his loss:
hot theirs is the consolation that he acted
well his part. His exemplary conduct wjll
ff?v?r remain worthy of imitation.

Dear Sir:?I send yon this to certify to
ou that your Extract of Yellow-Dock and
area pa rill a has performed one of the most
ronderful cures on n?e that has ever been cffctcd
on man.
I have been afflicted for forty years with
ruptions or, my legs and feet; in 1818 they
?t so bad that I had to go on crutches,
nd in 1849 1 had one leg amputated above
io knee. In about nine months after my
ther leg broke out in large dating and runing
sores from my knee to my foot, and
ischarged a great deal of offensive matter,
ly groin also broke out in large biles which
ischarged mueh offensive matter, and at
le same time my left hand broke out in
irgc running sores nearly to my elbow.
The misery that 1 have suffered for the
ist two years, 1 cannot describe to you. I
as in such agony that I never rested day
r night.
In October last my son biought mc one
f your bo die wrappers; I read it, and found
cord of some wonderful cures performed
y your 'Extract of Ycllow-Doek nnd Sar:i
pari I la,' I sent and got two bottles of it.
nd commenced taking it. In two w ccks to
iy great astonishment, my so.es all became
nay, and I could sleep all night, a thing I
ad not done for two years. When I had
tkeu six bottles, my sores were nearly all
euled, Mysoyes got well as if by enchantlent.
I have now used in all, eight bottles
f your "Extract of Yellow-Dock and Sarun.l
I RAU* unnwidnr m\*m?lf* wi.ll
I entreat nil of the afflicted to try this
ledicine for I believe it will cure nny known
sense in the world. Iwiy aside nil prejniee
nnd just try it, nnd proclaim its great
orth to suffering mankind and eutrcat them
0 take it, for it will cure them.
My case is well known in n large portion
f South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama,
nd if any should doubt the above cure, I inite
them to call on nie.nnd I will show them
te *c?rs. I can be found in Tallapossa
