THE~WIFE.
BY T. r. B ***** .
When fieklc friendHliin like Ihc flower.
Expanding into life;
But goon to wither in nn hour,
Exerts its cherished strife?
When tossed on life's tempestuous sen,
With lights and shadows rife?
YYh en nil forsake, nlns! we flee
And trust n loving wife.
Like as the cool refreshing shower,
By gentle zephyrs fann'd,
Lifts up the siekly, drooping flower
That it may fair expand.
So does the wife her aid bestow?
She hinds the broken heart;
Affections sweetest halms do flow,
Shu sunshine doth impart.
See with what patience she endures
Affliction's < hastening rod ;
For, while her genial smile allures.
Her lirtfl trus-1 is in God.
Thus, as the sun doth splendid shine
Along the silver stream?
So doth her human face divino
In smiles angelic beam.
When sleep scaled lip the infant's eye.
She, anxious, by his side,
Directs her gaze, and heaves a sigh
That he may safe abide.
'Tin then that woman's greatest love.
Like adamantine chains,
In all the sweetness of the dove,
The wife, the mother, reigns.
And when death grasps the tender dove,
Arid plueks the cherished leaf;
Gli! then, behold a mother's love !
Behold r. mother's grief!
lh hold her on the bed of death,
The last, the close of life,
The soul returns, the fleeting breath,
The daughter, mother, wife.

Governor Seymour of New York wrote to
him, that since he had vetoed the Liquor

gentlemen in different parts of the State,

course in the premises.
Among them was one from an honest old
deacon, who resided somewhere in the eeiitre

in the strongest terms. The old gentleman
alluded to informed the Governor that ho
was deeply interested in the deb ites ou both

sa'nl, "looked up" his Bible from Genesis to

deliberation he eamo to the conclusion
that all great and good men, as Noah. Moses,
David, Solomon, and Jesus, not only
were partakers of tho "rosery," but reconimended
it to others;?in a word, it: his researches

Have recently published the above work,

from the preface.
If one struggling sister in the groat human
family, while listening to the history
of my life, gains courage to meet and brave
severest trials; if she learn to look upon
them as blessings in disguise: if she be
strengthened in the performance of "daily
duties," however "hardly paid;" if she be inspired
with faith in the power imparted to a
strong trill whose end is gootf?then I am
amply rewarded lor my labor.
Anna Cora Mowatt.
We have read this book though itli more
! than the interest of a romance. 'I lie fail
authoress herself is one of the rarest of heroines.
Her eight years upon the stage
furnish a volume of the most entertaining
and instructive experience. Hut this is not
all?not ihc most interesting portion of hei
remark ble book. She begins with her infancy,
and introduces us to the bright little
butterfly girl sporting among the th-wers ol
Li Cnstagno, in Frnrce, where she happened
to be born. She gives us a brief sketch ol
her fauiilv, dcivcnd.intt), cin the maternal
side, of Francis I .cwis, one of the heroic
singers of the Declaration of Independence
We the follow her in a stormy voyage
across the Atlantic, in which she was ship
wrecked, when two little brothers wen
washed overboard ; one w as rescued ; but
"the other was lost." She then n lively
sketches the history of her sell ml-day joys
and sorrows, ending with an elopement ;in?i
a precticious marriage. All the dciuil*. hot!
trugic and comic, are given with the most
nnuising,< ften affecting particularity, ami
the sympathetic render is unvoluntnrily led
to make her joys and sorrows his own.?
Like every true chapter of chccquered ho
man life, the lights and shadows nre ncarl)
equally, often fitfully blended, and we art
alternately moved to tears and laughter.?
