The Christian's estimate ol' Wealth.
Tlie Rev. Try on Ec wards lias cry truly
ai:<! forcibly stated the merits of this sub
cct?thus:
"Tho l?iblc places wealth on the salt e
footing with every other temporal good <
?to be rcgarned in the same manner, es
teemed for the sumo reasons, sought in
the same snirit, and used for the same .
cud. Its very first mention of gold is its
connection with the garden of Eden, and
its last with tile New-Jerusalem?thclicu
vi'idy ciuv. It come pares the tried and
pmified C liri.-tian to g"M front the furnace;
:t in*">>n;s us that (hmI gave riches
to Sijl^mon as a mark of his Vivor?
it dc.sftil.es the son of Man, when appearing
in his glory, as hn\ingon liis head ]
a golden crown. Its doctrine is, that property,
like health,intellect knowledge,infillence
character, ,s a tai.knt, entrusted by '
God, and to ho used and aceonnted for
to him. It is like food, which, properly
eaten contributes to health, but improperly
and exeessiacIv, brings on surfeiting, fever,
death. It is like water, which, kcf.t with- |
out the ship, aids her to float on to her
desired ha\in; l iit allowed to enter and till .
that ship, is her ruin. Held, with a right 1
spirit, an i tucd to right ends, it is like the ! 1
air, when moving in the healthful breeze, '
the minister of comfort, enjoyment, life; .
held with a wr. tig spirit, and used to .
v. long ends, it is like the same air when I
tainted with iho pestilence, or swept l?v <
the t ornndo, the medium of injury and 1
death
'It is not gold, hut the i.ovK,that is the J
excessive, supreme love of gold, which i (
the Uible teaches, is the root of all evil
which it declares is 'idoleitry.' The
patriarch does not say. 'if 1 have possessed
gold,' hut, 'If I have made gold *
my hope, or said to 0 e line gold, thou
art my confidence, this were an iniquity.' '
fhe Saviour does not exclaim, "How hurd- i .
U shall they that have riches,' hut as his ,
ow ii explanation is, 'llow hard is it for ,
thent that trust in riches, to enter into ,
the kingdom of God!' Sought as a I
mean* to an end, like cv ?iy other means, I '
wealth is valuable tor a thousand tilings; I ]
sought merely as an end, it becomes a | 1
course. i'roperlv used, it is a good; abused,
it is an evil. In the one case, it i 'the ,
load stone to draw men nearer to God
in the other, 4 the millstone, to sink theiu
to perdition."
A Good One.
Hiding over the Hamilton and H.iyton

of Mr. John Van 1 hisen, (the gentlemanly
conductor, pro ten*,) lie told us the
following incident, which wo thought (
worth "making note of:" (
"One day last week" said ho, "there
came on hoard of the cars from one of ,
the country stations, a very pretty, gen- I
tcel young lady, en route for this city.? (
She was alone, so 1 waited upon her to u
good seat, and made her as comfortable '
as possible. It was a few minutes before
the starting hour, and she was so agreeable
and so talkative, I lingered and had
epiite a pleasant chat. Afterwards when
collecting the tickets she detained me
again an instant, and trace me some tine
! caches, which she said came from Iter
friends orchard, in the country; and I
began to think that I had not met with '
>Uch a charming lady passenger for ma
nv a day. "Well, we arrived at the depot?
there I attended her to a carriage, '
hand, d her np ihe carpet-hag, and after
all, what do you think she said ?"
Now, we thought, of course, that the <
lady would say, very politely, thank you,
sir,' smile like a gleam of sunshine, the 4
carriage would roll off, our friend John 1

j can't describe, observed ;?
"You inu>t consider this, sir, merely a

j breath.
"What did you say ?" we asked.
"Why,! (bought that rather uncivil
at least; so 1 replied very quietly?
"Certainly not, madam ; I was just going
to remark that you must not feel
slighted if unnoticed by me anywhere but J
on the ears?for, really, we conductors
have to be careful about our acquaintances

"And the lady i" said we.
"She looked quite silly as she drove

A Presbyterian clergy in Ohio, in writing
of "Hunter's Medical Manunl," says: "Thousands
upon thousands of our youth, by evil
example and the intluenec ot the passions,
have been led into the habit of self-pollution
without realizing the sin and fearful consequences
upon themselves and their posterity.
The constitutions of thousands who are
raising families hat e been enfeebled, if not
broken down, and they do not know the
cause or the cure. Any thing that can bo
douo so to enlighten and influence the public
uiind as to check, and ultimately to remove
this wide-spread source of human 1
wretchedness, would confer the greatest
blessing next to the religion of Jesus Christ, 1
on the present and coming generations. In- 1
temperance, (or the list; of intoxicating
drinks.) though it has slain thousands upon
thousands, is not n greater scourge to the
liumaii race. Accept my thunks on liehalf
of the afflicted, and, believe me, your coworker
in the good work you are so actively
er gaged in.
