For the J.edgor. , '
' fho sudden appearance of I'ktcr Johnson in
our Village, niter a report having been circulated,
nml generally l?elieve?i. that he was dim!, induced
the writing of the follow ing linen. I propone
to publish at the old sailor's own request.
I have n tale, a tale of woe,
A tnle will make you very noriy:
Did Peter Johnson he lias lelt.
For the country South of Poygato:y.
No wore, no more we'll hear his laugh, ,
To cheer our hearts and make us merry;
He has cleared this earthly part and sailed \
For the emmtry South of Purgatory.
It was an iron stern comma d,
'Its justice, though, wecauuot iptaty;
That bade Old Peter trim his sails, .
For the country South of Purgatorv. .

He was a man \yas good and kind,
But hero no longer could he tarry;
II e sends awav before the wind, j ,

At last lie yelled "Cast out the haste,

And thither they steer'd, nil hands being drmnk, I
But Peter sought a colder clime;
lie rolled the crew all overboard,
And steered streightway for the shores of

Fall Plowing.
Having some twenty odd acres we intend
planting to corn next spring, the '
question comes up in a practical way. j
What will the soil gain in the available
food of plants by plowing it this fall?
On light sandy or gravelly soils we doubt
the propriety of plowing several moths
before the seed i? committed to the earth, '
.because we fear tl^t the olcments of both j
.organic and inorganic matter rendered
soluble by tillngo, may be washed out of
the open ground, and the land impoverished
rather than enriched by fall plowing.
We have no doubt of the fact that tillage
often operates greatly to the injury ol the
soil, sometimes l?y dissolving the food of j
plants prematurely, so thn^ a part is lost >
by tbe washing of the plowed earth long |
before it is plantod or sown, and other j
times the hue clay and sand run together !
and become hard before spring, so that
the labor of fall plowing is lust. These
1 _ v ?
rornnrKs are mauo 10 snow that there are
.two 8idesto tlic question of autumn plowing
for feeding in the spring. Soils wlm-li
are either very open, or very compact
from an excess of tine clay, gain little by
stirring thorn long in advance of planting
Frost, however, may, and often doe*,
operate to improve clay land by rendering
it more frable, if plowed in the fall or winter.
Tbis is particularly true of clavev
loams soils that do not run together like
potter's clay. Clav soils which, are not
benefitted oy fall plowing, nearly always
.need ynderdreaining to increase their
porosity and fribility. Hy throwing tlio
grownd into beds when plowed, ^ud opening
a deep wates furrow between each ;
land, much may be done to prevent the i
soil from becoming very hard in dry i
weathor, and mortar in wet weather.? 1
Vqdoubtedly autumn till ge saves field
raborin the spring, when one's teams may
not be in the Lest possible condition for
service, while a great deal of work is suffering
to bo done. II d we plenty of
good teain9 and laborror , weshotile rareJy
plow any field more than four weeks before
it was to be town or planted.
So soon as tillage develops the elements (
of fertility, aid rains fall to dissolve them (
p,nr notioe is, that the seed should ho in I
the ground to grow and consume the raw '
material of thejjerop. Wo are well aware '
pf the recent researches of Prof. Way
and others, showing tiie retentive power (
of soils in preventing tl.f loss of manures
applied to land in a state of solution; we
are not, however, satisfied that expecta- i
yp.ns in that mntter are to he fully real- I
rzed by farmers. Mr. M^chi says that his 1
liquid manure, after passing through sev- '
oral feet of soil, still contains both organic j
and inorganic matter; and we know that
^nallgood land, rain-water that comes out j
in springs and we\ls is not pure, hut t
abounds in hoth vegetable and minif.il t
salts dissolves! out of the ground. Tillage
increases the solubility and solution of '
these substances, which are tlio food of (
plants, and hence tillage at the titnc of j,
r planting and aftcrwanls augment-, the
feeding afedjwrowth of crops. (
Having decided to plow a field in the
fall wcahonid not hesitate tobreak up the r
