Uncle Sam psys every year, for having '
his mails carried around from New York to
San Francisco and Oregon, something |
like six hundred and fifty thousand dollars,
r about one fourth as much as the whole
inland mail transportation of the Stat s and
'Teritories. A? the mails cost the carriers no
'trouble and but little room, tlie revenue is
Almost clear gain. It might, therefore, he
presumed that the service would he perform ed
with the ntmost tidelit/ and promptitude.
"No such thing It is performed with the
atmost carlcssness and tardiness. Public J
intelligence reaches us from the Pacific j
sometimes a week earlier than private advi- t
ces. There is no e ense for dclav so syste- 1
matic. There is no reason why comnierci- I
al interests should suffer, and the public 1
money should be thrown away wholesale, as t
a bounty to neglect and indolence. If it be '
absolutely necessary to pay two thirds of a s
million dollars yearly, to the Panama Corn- *
panies, do It by all means. Make it a gratuity.
Let them have it oil condition that j
they do ruA carry the mails; and transfer the ,
busidess to the company and the route which
in every instance, anticipates the arrival of
tho slow steamers of the mail line. The
commercial community of San Francisco, is
eager and unanimous for the change. Quite
as keen dissatisfaction prevails in New York.
