the United States, They are both remarkable
good men, an^are mucb esteemed.
The reason of th^f arrest cah only be
conjectured.
We had barely got over considering
the affair of the (Jornelia, when tlieChildo j
Harold, American bark, which had just
arrived, was ordered by the Government
to l>e unloaded with all dispatch.it having
received information that sundry packages
containing arms bad been shipped on
board of her at New York, and to make

house officer, two Italics of police were
placed on board, the one ticing ia uniform,
the other in private clothes. Tlio vessel
vras speedily discharged, but nothing un- ,
usual wn9 found, much to the astonishment
of the gaping Lazaroni that crowded
round the vessel, expecting to see cannon,
and other wondcrous things, come out of
her.
Serious Accident,
Our village (says the Anderson Southern
Rights Advocate) was thrown into consternation
on tho mornii g of Wednsday,
the 20th ult, by the upsetting and complete
wreck of a carriage, in which were
a party of ladicr, consisting of an elderly
lady, Mrs. Mary Mantz, Miss Kate P.
Hobbs, and Miss Eugenia Lanham, all of
Edgefield, and Miss Lizzio Pinnell, of
"Greenville. The horses became frightened
at some object opposito the resid. nee of
Mr. Joel Towers, and dashed off at a
rapid speed. The noseband bccamo detached
from tho tongue of tho carriage,
and having no means of holding back, tho
liorses were ceinpelled to run to keep out
of the way, there being a gentle declivity
in the street Tho driver jumped off, anil
the horses being permitted to go at pleasure,
on turning the street near the old
livery stable, fe(j into a gulleyand remained
stationary.
The carriago was capsized and completely
demolished?torn all to pieces.
Miss Lanham was uninjured. Mrs Mantz
and Miss Pinnell were badly hurt, but
are now in a fair way of recovery. Miss
llobbs was slightv injured, but is now up
and able to attend school.
I Health of Colombia.
I Wo regret to learn that reports are
circulated in the country which leave an
impression that Columbia is sickly. We
are not among those who would conceal
the slightes indication of sickliness, likely
to prove dangerous to strangers, and we
now positively assert, on tho authority of
practising physicians, that Columbia has
not been so healthy for many years?and
ita general health is almost proverbial?as
it is the present season. There is little or
no fever, and the deaths which have oc- <
currcd have all been from specific causes,
having no relation to the general salubrity
of our town.? Carolianian.
??^
A Fracas ih a Cot rt IIoom.?The
Cincinnati Republican states that a fracas ,
occurred in tho court room at Madison,
Ind., a few days ago, lietween tho Hon. <
Jesse 1). Rright, U.S. Senator, and M. C. 1
Garbcr, Esq., editor of the Madison Courier.
Mr. (iarl?cr, being on the witness
stand, it is said, insinuated that Mr. Rright
was uo gentleman, whereupon tho lutter
hurled an inkstand'at his head, which was
returned by a blow from tho editor's cano.
Tho fight then became general, several
others taking part in it, but quiet was
finally restored, and the court fined about
i a dozen of them $10 each.?f Bait. Sun.
Death from Drowning.?On sale day
evoning last Capt. II. Henry, of this District,
in attempting to ford the river near
I this place, where the Newberry road cros(
acs it, was thrown from his horse and
drowned. Since the late freshet the ford
has been impassable, and ('apt. llenry, at ,
the time of the accident, was unfortunately
too much intoxicated to be nware of his i
danger or to save himself from his perilous
attempt?Laurensville Herald.
Fatal Accident.?We learn from the
Chronicle and Sentinel that Mr. II. Palmer
Tyler, of Graniterille, S. C?, was accidentally
killed at the Eagle and Phoenix
Hotel, in AugustA, Ga., on Wednesday
night, 20th ult, by either falling or jumping
from the window of his room in tho
> ^ third story.?Carolinian.
Homicides.?We understand that, on
Friday last, a man by the namo of Joseph
Futerell was killed by Issac Mcdlin. They
had been at a barbecue somewhere on
the Sand Hills. At another barbecue,
given the same day, or the day previous,
a difficulty occurred between two men, in
which both were injured, one of them, it
is thought, fatally.?Ibid.
Discontinued.?The post office at Palmetto,
Laurens District, has been discontinud.
Nomination.?A writer in the Evening
News nominates Cot F. J. Moecs for the
office of Ooveroor.
fy We nre requested to state that Divine
eerviee will be held in the Presbyterian
Church si Lancaster, by the Rev. Mr. Douglass,
en Sunday next* and at Wsxhaw
