\ Methodist Church South. Tho following missionary intelligence gives some idea of the extent of the efforts . of this denomination to spread the gospel. f The labors, in behalf of tho negro popu t lotion, furnish an instructive commentary on <he slanders and assaults upon the institution, and Irotn which our northern neighbors should learn to judge us less f handily: The Methodist Episcopal Church, South, | has a promising China mission, supported j I at considerable expense. I They have also ten missions among the i Germans; seven missionaries, 332 inein bers, and 133 Sabbath school scholars, tn T..JI? .1 ? ? ... uivn luuinu nurK uiej nave a i mis- , sions, 27 missionaries, 4,477 members, 1,201 scholars in schools, 489 Sabbath | t school scholars. There n?e twenty missions in California, ' thus forming a conference. The following is the annual contributions from 1840 to the year 1852 inclusive: 1840 Ij68.629 1817 73,797 18.8 62,613 1849 65.494 1860 85.673 185 1 113,801 185 2 120,000 From the foregoing it will l?c seen that ! the contributions, in the space of seven j years, have nearly doubled. In the destitute portions of the regular i work, there are 136 missions; 100 mission- j aries; 22,578 white members; 1,022 col- | ored members; and 3,089 Sunday school scholars. "There are among the colored people in i the South 120 missions, 111 missionaries, I 33,788 colored members, 700 white nieinliers, and 10,385 children and adults re- I ceiving religious catechetical instruction on j iii0 great principles or me unrislian rcli- 1 gion. More missionaries are much wanted.? Respecting tlie Pon Pon mission in South j Carolina, Rev. W. C. Kirkland says: "The i owners, and particularly the patrons of i the mission, are generally religious, and i they esteem it a part of their religion to ' afford their people the means of religious j instruction. They have their cripple and infirm sent to the church. 1 have never known Christian owners more zealous in this good cause. I find, among our patrons, Col. L. Morus and C. Raring Esq., who were the pioneers in this work, and whose zeal has not abated by time." "Rev. W. II. Crenshaw, of Raton ! Rouge, La., writes that he found Raptists and Methodists among the slaves, who were brought from the more northern slave States many years since, who cling I to their old churches, and have made good progress in disseminating their doctrines among the Creole or Catholic negroes.? He gives. too. a verv livelv tleserintion of w , J I " ~ I a negro marriage, which was accompanied j I by groat display in the house of the own- j cr, and a largo expenditure. Mr. Crenshaw then concludes: "The Sabbath morning after the wedding, 1 had a very largo 1 audience of blacks, and our meeting una 9 a happy one. Tlio whites attended with their slaves, and all are apparently interested."
