Letter from General Pierce. The accompanying correspondence, whicl wo find in the Washington Republic? Saturday, will commend itself to publi attention. It embraces a letter from Gcr Pierce, exculpating himself from th charges founded upon the published re jK?rts of his Now Boston speech, and giv mg his own veision of his position befon the counlrv on the slavery nnestion: To the Kililor of the Rejutolic: Dear Sir: On the appearance in you paper of a charge intended, if not calcul site*.! seriously to impair and perchance t< destroy the confideuco of General Pierce' southern supiKirtes in his soundness on tin slavery question, I addressed him a letter which together with his reply, I now asl you, as an act of justice to publish. 1 make this request, presuming youi object, like mine, to have been the discov erv of the truth. Very respectfully, EDWIN DE LEON Washington, Aug. 13, 1852. Washington, July 17, 1852. Dear Sir: Enclosed you will find an ar tide, in which, as one of the editors of the Southern Press, of this city, I took issui with inv colleague in advocacy of vom claims to southern support for the l resi dency. That action was predicated upon my belief of your entire soundness upon the slavery question. Within the last week, a speech purporting to have been delivered by you in January last, has been republished from two Democratic papery in your own State, (which are said now to support you.) On the truth or falsity of this, much ' denoiul*. Xi?itlmr tl.? with whom I act, n<>r myself, can consent that any doubt should rest <>n a matter c'. such importance; but, placing full reliaurc on the fearless frankness of your character, on their behalf and my own, I respectfully n>k of you whether that report, which your southern supporters believe to be without foundation as opposed to your previous course is correct? The peculiar "position which I occupy must plead my apology for troubling you with this letter. Very respectfully, vour obedient servant, fcl.)WIN I)E LEON. Gen. F. Pikkce, Concord, N. 11. Concord, N. II., July 23, 1862. My Dear Sir: Surrounded by pressing engagements, 1 seize the earliest opportunity to reply to your letter of the 17th iustunt. 1 much regret that any thing connected with myself should have been the cause of disagreement between you and gentlemen with whom you have been associated in the editorial department of the Southern l'ress. I do not reniemlier #?v?r to have seen what purports to be a report of a speech delivered by mo at New Boston, in this State, in January last, until my attention was called to it as republished in the Republic. The pretended report is, as 1 presume was designed to be, an entire misrepresentation. It is not merely untruthful, but is so grossly and absurdly fulse as to render, in this vicinity, any deni d of its authenticity entirely unneccessary. The two papers n noted?the Independent Democrat, published in thi.place, and the Democrat published in Manchester?are thoroughly abolition journals; and have been and are zealously opposed to the Democratic party. For a long time prior to the meeting at Now Boston, and ever since, they have been unsparing in their attacks upon me p? rHoiud^atid ill their bitter denunciation of what they have been pleased to term my pro-slavery sentiments. l?ut it would be s uiiethiiig now for cither of these patters to deny the consistency of my opinions upon the subject of the constitutional rights of the South in relation to slavery. My opinions and the avowal of them have been everywhere the same. E'er mindful of the ditliciiltics and dangers which so long brooded over the assemblage of wise men and pure patriots to whoso spirit oi concession and earnest effort* we are indebted for tho Constitution under which we have enjoyed such signal prosperity, advancement and happiness, 1 have regarded tho subject as too vital and delicate to be used as an element of sectional appeal in party conflicts. My action and any language in New Hampshire, touching this matter, have been at all times and under all circumstances, in entire accord unco with my action and language at Washington. My vote* in the Senate and L House of UeproseiitatIves were not repub ^ hshed in the Era for the first time. They liuve been again and again paraded t? arouse the passions and prejudices of out people against tne individually, and against the party with which it has been my pride ami pleasure to act. There has been no attempt to evade the force of the re' cord. It has been at all times freely ad milled, and my position sustained upoi grounds satisfactory to my own mind. I am not surprised to know that the Attempt to prove mean abolitionist provokes innol merriment among men of all parties here and this weak and untruthful sketch u what puri>ort* to l>o my speech, is really too rcdicuiuus to l>e considered in any ser ious light. I am in the daily receipt of letter? pro ]K>unding the greatest, variety of curious questions, upon all conceivable subjects.? letter* of this character cannot be an swered of course. No individual eouli command either the lime or strength tin herculean task would require. I may add, that such a correspondence would hy no means comport with my views of duty The Democratic nsvtv ?>nt its d.-Iconic to Haiti more not alone to nominate caodi (I a ten, but to reaffirm principle* aud t< jHrescnt the lending issue* ujion which tie canvass should be conducted. If I could deem myself capable of im proving the platform there adopted, it i quite certain that I should decline, eithe at the call of individuals or association* to incur tho charge of arrogance to whicl any attempt to uTt^r, amend or enlariro it would inevitably subject me. Vour letter is of an entirely differcn character. It seeks truth in relation toai alleged fact, it speaks of history, to whiol too searching an appeal cannot be made I appreciate the estimate you aeem to hav of my character for directness; and bej you to accept my thinks for your effort to vindicate iny claim to that trait, a least before the public. I am, with high esteem, your moa obedient acrvant, JF11AN K nKRCE. Kdwin I>x Lkox, Washington, IM\ The Hook Concern.?The following h extract from one of the New York letters ?f of an exchange, accounts for tho delay in c adjusting the question of dividing tho J ' Methodist Hook Concern situated in New j. I York: I "The long-pending ditliculty between the Methodist Churches, North and South, in respect to the mammoth Hook Concern in this city, has not yet been finally disr posed of, although tlio principle involved ' - was decided by the United States Circuit ) Court in favor of the Church South?and j the Church North has determined not to q 3 appeal. The cause of the delay is said a , to be the confused state of the accounts v : of their concern, which the most skillful '' bookkeepers find it difficult to unravel; a r I and, until these accounts are straighted - out, it will lie impossible to ascertain the value of the concern. The fact is, the . Hook Concern has been in the hands of the most stupid and inconvpetent men that could have been called from the whole ~ field of the Methodist denomination. They may have been abundantly blessed with J piety, but they have not had the least p - modicum of Icsiuess fact, and have gone fi r on, heaping hluiukr upon blunder, until C the financial department is in almost ini cxtricahlo confusion. The In'st way to ^ i i settle the matter would Ih? to sell out the ,, ] whole concern to the highest bidder, and i I to divide the proceeds." j.; i , K (yiir.itaw and 1 >ani.inion uaii. roao. p ? It is our pleasure, this week, to make y\ , the gratifying announcement, that the requisite amount of stock necessary to se- K - cure the charter of the above road, ami ^ , for the organization of the Company, has I been subscribed. We look upon this as I the most important event to the people of ^ I this cctiou ot country, which has occur- ^ red within the recollection of the "oldest >i inhabitant." The upper Pee l >ee country abounds in unavailable resources which the completion of this and the Wiltning- T ton and Manchester Kail Uoud must do- '* velope and make valuable. The securing of theeharter, ami tin.* organization of the p Company, with the spirit manifested, we feel an ample guarantee for the completion of the Komi, at the earliest possible moment. Indeed, it only remains for the stockholders, who are to meet in this place, is as will he seen by reference to the adver- ei tismcllt of the Commissioners on 11... m-i inst., to elect a Board of IMrcctors imbued l?i with their own spirit, to remove nil doubt, en That they will do this, we feel confidently w assured.?
