Says World Production Deter mines Wheat Price. t "World production is the dominat ing influence on the price of wheat in the United States" is the opinion of M. W. Pickell, agricultural statis tician for the Farmers National Grain Dealers' Association at Chica go, who has just finished "a three j months' special study of the factors j influencing the price of wheat. In I other words, the price of wheat in this country is fixed by the world's production of wheat rather than the movement of wheat from other coun tries into the United States. If this is true we can't see how a protective tariff on imported wheat is to benefit the wheat grower to any great ex tent. From August 1, 1921 to July 31, 1922, the United States imported 363,456 bales of foreign cotton. Du ring the same period we exported ap proximately 6,000,000 bales to for eign countries. It is therefore evi dent that a cotton tariff cannot pos sibly benefit the cotton grower; as long as the United States sells fif teen times as much cotton as she buys. In wheat and cotton, we have two of the most important crops grown in this country. Neither one of them is benefitted by a protective tariff. There are possibly a few crops of mi nor importance which are benefitted by a very high tariff, but what is gained by the producers of these mi nor crops is more than counteracted by the tax that such a tariff puts on the farmers as a whole. We fail to see how a farmer, especially a South ern farmer who grows cotton, can favor a very high tariff.-Progress ive Farmer. The Washington Tradition. They judged occa- . sions as they came by the standards j : of those principies and they did their ?: best to apply the principles to the j occasions with as great a measure of |. common sense as humanity permit ted.
