Col. C. K. Henderson Dies Ripe Age After Well Spent Life. Aiken, Sept. 15.-Col. C. K. I derson, retired merchant, promii churchman, for many years one the leading citizens of Aiken widely known throughout South ( ? olina for his philanthropies, diec his home here this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the age of 78 years, i Henderson had been in ill health the past year, but his condition been serious only for a short t prior to his death. Born near Trenton, in Edgef county, April 20, 1844, Colonel H derson started life a poor boy. youth was spent at Graniteville, fi which place he entered the Conf erate army. After the close of war he returned to Graniteville i returned to work with his mea? savings. He entered business a: merchant* afterwards removing Aiken and in business here amas; a comfortable fortune. He was one of the f oui ers of the Aiken Institute and h served as a trustee of this instr tion since its beginning. For neal half a century he had been super tendent of the Sunday school of t ; First Baptist church of Aiken, a probably holds the record as a Sr. day school worker. Besdies givi generously to the church of which had long been a faithful member, 1 philanthropies are well kno\ throughout the state. Colonel He derson gave largely of his means educational and denominational i stitutions. \ Colonel Henderson was an arde . Confederate veteran, a member Barnard E. Bee camp at Aiken. was his custom each year to celebra the battle of Bull Run with a d:.nn at which he presided as host to tl comrades of his camp. Besides h widow, he is survived by one so Frank P. Henderson of Aiken; tv daughters, Mrs. E. V. Baldy of Har ville and Mrs. W. H. Vines of No folk, Va.; one brother, Frank ] Henderson, of Aiken, and two sister Mrs. Z. T. McKinney and Mrs. W. The Home Demonstration Ageni of South Carolina are assembled ? > Winthrop College, Rock Hill, S. C for a special meeting. Spe cial emphasis is being given to can ning the products of the Home Pro ducers' Association. The Pine Bari Fish Stew, as made by the coas counties of our state, is being usec by this association. This recipe wai recently completed by the State Con servation Specialist. The club markets that are beinf so successfully operated by the fara women of our state, are still pros perous in 18 counties. This is splen did that so many survived the long dry summer months. New inspiratior was given the agents by the excelleni address given on "Woman's Part ir Our Future Agricultural Program,' by Assistant Director, D. N. Wat kins. ' Many counties which are unable tc have a club market are shipping pro duce to Charleston which is sole . there by Miss Carolina Alston, the County Home Demonstration Agent of Charleston County. This is partic ularly true of poultry products. This necessitated giving the agents special work in packing and shipping of poul try, caponizing, killing* poultry for market, housing and feeding of poul try and grading of eggs. This instruc tion was given by poultry specialists, Miss Juanita Neely, Mr. N. R. Mehr hof, and Miss Gladys Tappan. Cutting and curing meat was a practical and opportune lesson given the agents by Mr. D. T. Herrman of .Clemson College. After this beneficial training, the agents will return to their counties with a much greater degree of effi ciency for meeting the problems in each county. Indian Tribes of U. S- Wil! Meet. Chicago, Sept 16.-A meeting of .representatives of almost all the In dian tribes of North America will be held here September 20 to 26, under the auspices of the Pow Wow club of the Indian Fellowship League. Many of the most noted Indians of the United States and Canada, among them priests, preachers, mis sionaries, lawyers, physicians and mechanics of all branches, are ex pected to attend. Invitations have been sent to the League of Canadian Indians, Society of American Indians, Order of the Indian Tepee, Mission Indians Federation for Human Rights and many other organizations among the tribes. Included in the program are Indian dances in native costume and enact ed as they were in the days before the advance of the white men. There will be an Indian village, basket and bead workers, Indian seers and medi cine men. Senators Robert LaFollette and Governor Len Small are to address the pow wow. Chief Joseph Leclere, of the Pottowatnee tribe, will give recollections of Chief Shabbona who was a brother-in-law of his grand father. T. P. Quinn will speak on the "White Man's Use of the Red Man's Land." One afternoon of the pow wow will be devoted to boy scouts, camp fire girls and lone scouts. The organization was formed to bring about conditions which will engender a better understanding of the American Indian; to encourage research for the purpose of recording the deeds and customs of the present race for the benefit of their descend ants; to produce a system that will maintain fellowship between the members bf the Indian race and1 the citizens of the country and to obtain full citizenship for all Indian people. May Oust Tolbert Capital Hears. Washington, Sept. 16.-Rumors which have been current here for some time that the white faction of the so-called -- Republican party in South Carolina, of which National Committeeman and State Chairman, Joseph W. Tolbert, is "boss," would make a determined effort to throw him at the Republican convention to be held in Columbia, September 19, were partially verified here today. The reasons assigned for this pur ported action are mainly that Tol bert, it is now seen, hasn't the ghost of a chance to ever be confirmed as marshal for the western district of South Carolina. It is known that behind the lines the brakes have been set effectively to prevent confirma tion ever coming. There are certain things the congress of the United States will do and there are some it will noL do, and among the latter is confirm an appointee, except in the most unusual cases, over the person al objection of the senator from the state affected by the matter. Seeing, therefore, that "the half has never been told" and that it is only a mat ter of time until the senate will eith er reject Tolbert or the president withdraw his nomination. This would reduce whatever influence he might have in making appointments outside of post office matters, by about nine ty per cent. In other words, as the old ship goes down the craft is scut tled. Its sailing days are gone and it is left to drift upon the rocks of ob livion.
