Heavenly Recognition From Bible Assertion and the Silence of Christ. (Continued from Fifth Page) | because your names are written in heaven." And Je sus meant this* if we might put the 1 meaning of the same words into other words into His mouth: ''Mat thew, your name NOW IS written in heaven." "John, Peter your names right now as I speak ARE written in heaven." "Thomas, Philip, your names ARE written in heaven-re joice." Did not the verse of the morning hour say: "I have friends in the Spirit land, Not shadows in a shadowy band, Not OTHERS but THEMSELVES are they; And still I think of them the same As when the Master's summons came." Jesus said to the dying thief: "THOU shalt be with me in para dise." To the disciples He said: "I go to prepare a place for YOU and if I go and prepare a place for YOU I will come again and receive YOU unto myself that where I am there YOU may be also." Job said : "Out of my flesh I shall see God." Than God, we are not saved in some promiscuous way. We are not in Yonder world put into a . glorified mob. We shall not be lost and merged into some great ocean of being. We shaH exist as ourselves. Life hereafter will be conscious, in dividual, personal. "Rejoice because your names ARE written in heaven"- the earthly name that you NOW bear, that name IS-IS, even NOW-written in heav en, if you are a child of God. 3. What s Speaket a the Silence of Jesus? If it wer? not so I would have told you." In a world clamorous with philosophers who didn't know, in world in upheavel with false systems of thought, in a world in conflagra tion with high handed gainsayers, the one, the irreproachable one who did know, was silent, strangely, it may seem, silent. "If it were not so I would have told you." This silence speaks louder than any thunder that ever shook the universe. This argument from silence is pro verbially unsafe and dangerous argu ment in most cases. 3UT NOT*IN THIS CASE. . If the faith 'the disciples cherish ed about immortality had been false Jesus would have contradicted it. He was the Truth, as He said, and it would have been impossible for Him to let His disciples go in bondage to error. Is it to be imagined that Christ would allow them to go on cherishing hopes which had no sub stance? It was impossible that Christ should have failed to challenge a be lief so pervasive and so influential, if it were really false. His very si lence is all the proof I ask that the. great hope is true, for I know if it were not so He would have told us! NOTICE THE THINGS JESUS CORRECTED. li Disciples' conception of His Messiahship. ; They expected a great Prince clothed in purple and fine linen and glorious apparel to estab lish a mighty Kingdom. They thought Christ was destined for a throne like Caesar's. They dreamed of thrones, of thrones, of thrones-and oft they imagined, no doubt that there would be on great central throne on which Christ would sit and they on smaller thrones round about. But Jesus cor rected this, saying that the Son of Man must suffer many things of the scribes and chief priests and that they must expect something like what happened when His kingly robes became a shroud and when his throne shrunk to the narrow dimen sions of a grave. 2. Tendency to Make a Show of Religion. Jesus avoided advertise ment. "Go tell no man" was often on His lips. Bade the recipients of His mercy to be silent about it. "Do not .your alms to be seen of men." How* repulsive to Him were the prayers the hypocrites made on the street corners to be heard of men. He corrected this false idea of re ligion by saying "They have their re ward." Then "Except your righteous ness exceed this righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees ye can in no wise enter' the Kingdom of heaven." We may be seen to do good, but we must not do good just to be seen. 3. The Crown. One day, after He had wrought wondrously before the people of a miracle and teaching they wanted to make Him king. But Jesus slipped away from them and by His conspicuous absen.ee corrected the idea that had sprung up that He was out for crown. "NO," said He to their willingness and effort,to make Him king Thus did He correct their earthly conception of His heavenly mission. 4. The Disciples Quarrel. The dis ciples quarrelled about who should be first in His kingdom. Jesus cor rected their erroneous ideas of what membership in His kingdom meant by taking a little child and putting this' child in the midst, saying unto them as He taught them the great ness of His ministry, "Except ye be come as this little child ye can in no wise enter the Kingdom of heaven." 5. His face to Jerusalem. He set His face like flint to the city that had stoned the phophets and killed them that were sent unto her. The disciples flattered themselves that the hour of His enthronement had come. He told them plainly, almost bluntly, the bitter truth. "We go up to Jerusalem," said He, "and up there they will mock me, spit upon me, scourge me, kill me." He told them plainly that He was marching not to a THRONE but to a CROSS. 6. Enthusiastic Scribe. The scribe came running and said: "Master. I will follow Thee wherever Thou go \ est." Jesus saw he was cherishing ft.lse hopes. So with a candour that was almost cruel He confronted the scribe with the facts, saying: "The, foxes have holes, the birds' of the air, have nests, but the Son of Man hath not where to lay His head." 7. Two Notions of Greatness. Two notions prevailed as to greatness then. Prevalent these notions are to day. Many thought that a man's life was made up of what substance he could gather together, even though naked he came into this world and without anything he went out of the world. Jesus corrected this by saying "A man's life consisteth not in the (abundance of things which he pos I sesseth." How true it still is that our ?life doesn't consist in THINGS. Some thought that to have high position was to be great. But Jesus said :"Let him that is greatest among you be your servant." Great ness with Him came not through ex alted POSITION but through ser vice without which no man is great. Friends, the human heart craves and demands recognition. The old interchange of affection and love is an indispensable condition of the .blessed life. This is one of the great joys we associate with the Hereaf ter. Men cherished that hope in the olden days when Christ was on earth. Is it to be imagined that Christ would have lef them cherish it had it been false? But He had no word of criti cism for the beautiful and pathetic hope of reunion. His silence is an ar gument for its truth. 4. Conclusive Thoughts. !.. Who is the way to the city: There is but one answer. Jesus. He said "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me." Jesus bared His back to the merci less steel fingers of Pilate's scourge, He died the just "for the unjust that Me might bring us to God. He ibore our sins in His own body on the tree. All this to bring us to God. "What the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin condemned sin in the flesh." "Who will open mercy's door? Jesus will, Jesus will. As for pardon I implore? Jesus, blessed Jesus will. Who will take away my sin? Jesus will, Jesus will. Make me pure without, within? Jesus, blessed Jesus will." 2. What is it keeps us prepared for that place where we shall know each other? There is one thing and but one thing. The religion of the Lord Jesus, the Bible'translated into our daily living. What about this religion. "The crystal cannot equal it." Beautiful it is in the hope it kindles, beautiful in the sentiment.it implants, beauti ful in the proposition to garland and enthrone an immortal spirit. Talmage once said something like this. I would repeat it in substance to you. Solomon says this religion is a lily. Paul bays it is a crown. The Apocalypse says it is a fountain kiss ed with- the sun. Ezekiel says.it is a foliaged cedar. Christ says it is a bridegroom come to fetch home a bride. Do you agree with Solomon that it is a lily? Then pluck it and wear it r \ . f The Fa y Situa ? .. >.
