The South Carolina League of Wo men Voters asserts its purpose of existence, namely to safeguard and advance the legal, industrial and ?du -cational rights of women and to raise the standard of American citizenship ny working for a more intelligent .electorate. The League resolves as follows: Where in South Carolina the moth er and father are not equal guardians to their children there be it, 1. Resolved, That the South Caro lina League of Women Voters strong ly desires to see introduced in the General Assembly of South Carolina a co-guardianship law. 2. Resolved, That the South Caro lina League of Women Voters stands for a 'living wage for all workers, and equal pay for equal work for men arid.women alike. 3. Resolved, That the South Caro line League of Women Voters stands for a single standard of morals forj men and women and urges that fath ers and mothers train their sons as well as their daughters to regard pu rity of life. 4. Resolved, That a strong effort be made to induce the Legislature to raise the -age of consent .to 18 years. ' ? 5. Resolved, That we advocate im mediate, intelligent and impartial r? vision of our election, registration and primary laws. , 6. Resolved, That we advocate fi nancial support for the State Board of health and the organization of the Department of Child Welfare, Tu berculosis and Venereal disease with funds for their efficient administra tion. 7. Resolved, That we advocate a system of taxation which will pro-' vide necessary funds for all depart ments of the State. 8. Resolved, That we advocate -public school opportunities for all parts of the State, conforming to the best standards of the day with such remuneration for teachers as will attract men and women of high ?capacity. 9. Resolved, That women be placed -on all School Boards and Boards of Trustees of Institutions in which women and children are inmates. E. A. D. Card From Mr. Thurmond. All classes of all sections of the "United States are affected by the present frenzied financial situation. Don't think you are the only person likely to incur set backs and losses this ^year for practically all are in the "same boat; however, don't) be come demoralized and stampeded, for the boat will land safely yet. Re cently, information from all section? of the country has come to me, and I am pleased to say that the people |' of our county and State are weath ering this financial hurricane as well or better, than the majority of the] sections of our country. Money is tight, and times are hard, ] but I have seen worse. I recall some years ago when cotton sold for 4 cents a pound, and the country was scarce of corn ?.nd meat; now, we have a bumper corn crop and th?t means an adequate supply of bacon. When cotton sold for 4 cents a pound black clouds hung low but they rolled by and the sunshine was .as bright as ever. ?The West is dependent upon its grain, hay and livestock, in addition to those industries we c?n grow sor ghum cane, ribbon cane, peas, fruit, Vegetables, velvet beans and cotton- j and can live absolutely from our own f] gardens and fields and grow cotton Ias a surplus crop. While the market -value of our land does not compare with fhat of many states in. the nox-th and west, in my opinion, it is worth far more, for we can make every-1 thing they can, and a great deal more. * Our people generally are industri ous but we need skill and are rapid ly acquiring it-we are all right, just let. our creditors give us a chance and our abundant harvest will pay prac tically what we owe if cotton goes up, but if it doesn't they have the pledge of our honor, and this expe rience will teach us sense that will be worth millions to us another year. My hope for higher cotton is found ed upon three reasons; first, that the export and import corporation will help; second, the fact that the north, east, south and west are all shiver ing in this financial freeze, makes me believe that congress which meets very soon will take some beneficial action ; third, the world is said to I need every bale grown. Sow a big part of your land to grain and fertilize with cotton seed and prepare to cut your acreage in 'cotton another year, at least 40 per cent, and make at home the supplies for your table and farm-they are better than any you can buy, and far cheaper, and thereby, your need for money lessened.
