Hats Off to the Women.
It is undoubtedly to the women
vote that Aiken owes the very satis
factory result of Monday's mayoral
ty race.
To the newly enfranchised citizens
we take off our hats. They acquitted
themselves splendidly upon their first
opportunity to cast their ballots for
a house-cleaning in the City oi Aik
en.
When the women asked for the
privilege of participating in the mu
nicipal primary there were those who
strenuously opposed their taking
part and who, had it been in their
power, would have denied them this
privilege.
The woman vote was feared.
The Standard knew all along-and
said so at the time-that the woman
vote would be cast for cleaner civic
life. Our prophecy has come true. It
has come true in a most satisfying
manner.

women on the part of those who are
striving to make the world a better
place to live in, to create a healthier
and a more moral civic atmosphere.
What would have been the result
of Monday's primary election had
not the women voted is, of course,
largely conjectural, but as old Pat
rick Henry declared, we have no way
to judge the future except by the
past, and we all know what has al
ways happened in the past.
The victory-and it is a victory
whichever way the second primary
results next Monday-is a victory
for better city government and a
cleaner civic life, and this victory is
directly traceable to the woman vote.
Again we say-hats off to the
women of Aiken.-Aiken Standard.
