An Opinion on Tobacco , Growing. Not many years ago we would see print essays on cigarettes and try lg to blot out tobacco as was whis_ :ey. We all know that it is killing ?eople every day, but just because tere is'money to be made in grow lg it, people are planting it. I suspect we will have tobacco ?owing all around us. There are so lany other things that can be grown we can not grow cotton which rould do more good than tobacco. Why all the little boys will be :hewing and smoking and women fwill do like other women where they grow it in large quantities, and be using snuff and smoking it in days to~ come. Instead, if we leave it alone so many of our people will not use it Growing tobacco looks nearly as bad as the saloon did, for it is a slow poison that saps the life out of peo ple. We have seen men that would stop chewing or smoknig tobacco for a while and would look so much bet ter and I am sure they felt better. I have heard people say, "Why, th? doctor prescribed it." That is all right. Wait until he does. It takes poison to kill poison, so I think we should not begin growing tobacco.. Begin in time to think. Honolulu, Sept. 23.-Gable ad vices from Tokio to Nippu Jiji, Ja ' panese language newspaper here, re garding anti-Japanese legislation in California, report that the diplomatic council has decided that Japan will instruct Ambassador Shidehara to register vigorous protest if Califor nia passes the Japanese land laws on which there will be a referendum in November. The ambassador's protest will be based on the ground that such legislation is unconstitutional and a violation of Japan's treaty rights, it was said. Japan's origijilal plan, according to the advices, was to ask the United States to appoint members to an Am erican-Japanese commission, which would effect a settlement of the Ja panese problem in California and ward off possible anti-Japanese leg islation. This plan was abandoned because it wa sbelieved it was too [late for it to achieve any results. The popular belief in Japan is that the anti-Japanese legislation in Cal ifornia will pass by a 10 to 1 vote, according to the advices.
