Monday afternoon about five o'clock Mr. M. W. Hudgens and Dr. B. F. Jones met and engaged in a conversation of ten or fifteen min utes near the office and cotton seed scales of Mr. A. M. Timmerman, and just what led to the tragis ending of the interview is not known. Mr. Hud gens fired several shots from a pistol at Dr. Jones, all of them taking ef fect. The one that entered about the centre of the chest had not been lo-1 cated up to the time he was carried ? to Augusta. The details leading up j to the altercation are not known to | the public as there were no eye-wit_ j nesses. Dr. Jones had a pistol in the pocket of his car but none on his per son. All four of the local physicians were called to the aid of the wounded man and he was given the closest attention until he was carried to the hospital in Augusta Tuesday morn ing. He stood the trip well and while nothing very definite has been heard from him since his condition seems to be no worse. An X-ray photograph ?will be made before an operation is, undertaken to extract the ball. The .physicians believe he has a good chance for recovery. Immediately after the shooting Mr. Hudgens went to the Court "House and surrendered to the sheriff and is now in jail. When he will ap ply for bail has not been stated. Southern Exposition Fair. Elsewhere in this issue of The Ad -vertiser will be found the announce ment of the forthcoming Southern Exposition Fair at Augusta, which will be ?the big event in this section of Georgia and South Carolina dur ing the week of October 18th-23rd. It is announced that General Man .ager Sandford H. Cohen has devoted the entire year to the task of getting -together this fall the greatest fair ever put on in this section of the ?country and a glance at a few^of -the features mentioned in the adver tising matter will be sufficient to cre_ .ate a keen desire on the part of peo ple of this county to take in the sights of the big Exposition during the week October 18-23. Besides the educational features, including daily lectures on soil im provement and one entire day de voted to power farming during which ?every known power device used on the farm will be demonstrated-1 sides these informative events, tht will be no end of excitemnt of t most varied nature, the kind of ? tertainment that people like wh they go away from home for couple of days to seek diversion. It is announced that the fastt automobile races ever seen in t south will be staged daily, wi America's most daring and mc reckless drivers at the wheel of t speediest cars in the country. Amoi the drivers will be Jimmie Calve) Ray Chapman, Neal Brooks, K< Goodson and Louis Chevrolet. The nightly fire-works, guarantei to be the greatest pyrotechnics di play staged in the south this yea will prove a big drawing card. Di plays of unprecedented* grandeur, ii eluding the spectacular naval battl will prove entrancing and awe inspi ing. The free acts, too, are said to I of a high order, featuring Dare Dc il Wilson and the Aerial Lloyds. The Midway will open the eyes < the people of this section. The man moth Rubin and Cherry organizatio with twenty big shows a^nd six ridin devices will keep things" lively on th midway both day and night, and fe diversified entertainment no bette opportunity will ever be offered th people of this section to enjoy then i selves. For the lovers of the gridiror there will be two bitterly conteste games, one between the Univer'sit of South Carolina and the Presbji terian College of Clinton, S .C., thi to be staged on October 21st, and th other on October 23rd, betweei Richmond Academy and Columbi! High School. The greatest crowning achieve ment of the Exposition will be th' marriage of Miss Thrift to Genera Foo d Production, a beautiful an< spectacular pageant with 1,500 per ?formers, 500 singers and dancers an< 120 floats. This feature will be spon sored and put on by the Women': Clubs of Augusta under the directioi of Mrs. Espy, and in connection witl it will be a wonderful allegorical his tory of the Savannah Valley, depict ing every stage oC the developmen of this favored section.
