Mrs. W. H. Dorn spent the week
end at home, returning on Monday
to Columbia where she is under med
ical treatment.
Mrs. W. L. Dunovant is spending
the next ten days at that delightful
summer resort and place of inspira
tion, Montreat.

Miss Mary Adams of Greenwood

Miss Elizabeth Bryan of Green
ville is visiting Miss Katherine Mims.
These two young ladies graduated
in the same class at Winthrop Col
lege.
Miss Kellah Fair entertained at
dinner for Miss Elizabeth Bryan on
Monday, Miss Bryan being a niece

Mrs. W. S. Robinson is visiting
relatives in Hickory, N. C. She is ac
companied by her daughter, Miss
Kate Robinson, and little sons Joe
and Percy.
Capt. N. G. Evans and Miss Mary
Evans returned Thursday from San
Francisco, where Capt. Evans at
tended the National Democratic
convention.
Mr. E. S. Johnson has nearly com
pleted the remodeling of his resi
dence on Main Street, having added
a second story as well as making
other improvements.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Winn and
Miss Maggie Winn are visiting Mr.
#nd Mrs. T. E. Cochran in Eustis,
Fla. They also visited in Daytona
.Beach. Mrs. Winn writes that the
froad? are fine and flowers are bloom
ing everywhere.
Mr. Edward Jay of Grenwood ac
companied Miss Royall Peak from
Greenwood in his car, and was pres
ent at the funeral ef Miss Willie
Sullivan Peak on Wednesday.
Dr. R. G. Lee is conducting a meet
ing this week at Gray Court in Lau
rens county. Mrs. Lee and Beulah G.
are in Greenville with Mrs. Lee's
mother who is still very sick.
The Woman's Missionary Union,
auxiliary to the Edgefield Associa
tion will be held at Modoc Tuesday
and Wednesday, August 24 and 25.
Full program will appear soon.
Mrs. T. P. Morgan returned Mon
day from Waynesbore, Ga., where
she has been with her daughter,
Miss Gladys Mogan, who has been in
the hospital but is now steadily im
proving.
Mr. Abram Daitch has purchased
the stock of goods of Mr. E. S.
Rives and will continue the business
at the present stand until he can get
the store room now occupied by the
Peoples Bank.

Mr. Preston Lanham who dis
charges his duties faithfully as sales
man for Mr. J. D. Holstein is now
enjoying a short vacation, spending
a portion of the time with his sister,
Mrs. Mattie McKutchen, in Bishop
ville.
Dr. R. G. Lee is conducting re
vival services in Gray Court this
week but came down in his car this
morning to conduct the funeral of
Miss Willie Peak. He will return on
the train to Gray Court this after
noon.
Mrs. J. B. Kennerly went over to
the Columbia Hospital on Monday,
accompanied by her husband, Mr. J.
B. Kennerly and her sister, Mrs. W.
S. Cogburn. We hope to have a fav
orable report of her condition next
week.

Mr. T. S. Burton, a large mer
chant and planter of Smithville, Ga.,
has been spending several days in
Edgefield with relatives and friends
while en route from his home to join
his family in Asheville. Mr. Burton
was formerly from Edgefield county.
Mr. R. M. Scurry left for Boston
and other northern points on Satur
day. He will be away about ten days
on this trip which has been given
him by the managers and owners of
the Addison Mills. Mr. Scurry has
made good as a machinist from the
day he entered the employment of
this very generous corporation.
Dr. A. H. Corley went to Atlanta
Sunday night to have a number of
Chevrolet automobiles brought to
?Edgefield. As freight shipments are
so unsatisfactory Dr. Corley was ac
companied by Messrs. Frank Lyon,
W. A. Strom, H. H. Smith, Jr., Mil
ledge Rolston and John Bartley who
drove cars through to Edgefield.
Miss May Rives has returned from
?Cameron where she went to visit
her aunt, Mrs. Allie Wise. On the 6
of July this devoted relative of Miss -
May who had been a mother to her
on the death of her own mother, |
while yet a little girl, passed away,
and the anticipated happy summer '
together came to naught. Mrs. Wise ]
left no children of her own. (

day when a family re-union was
held. In addition to the great feast

stopped over in Edgefield Friday
morning while returning from the re
union.

Miss Lillian Smith who since her
school closing at the Logan school
in Columbia, has been in the hospital
in Columbia, is at home again doing
well. Miss Lillian is a splendid teach
er and useful in the church and com
munity wherever she goes, and her
many friends are grateful that she
is recovering.

Mrs. Manly Timmons, Joseph and

ington came over to Edgefield Thurs
day and remained over till Saturday,
visiting their friends, Mrs. Mamie N.
Tillman, Mrs. S. McGowan Simkins
and Mrs. J. L. Mims. Mr. and Mrs.
Parker came from Washington in
their car.
Having received a telegram yes
terday afternoon from the secretary
of the National Democratic Execu
tive committee asking him to do
some work in the national campaign
by making a speaking tour during
the month of August, Capt. N. G.
Evans decided to withdraw from the
race for the state senate. It would
be impossible to aid in the National
Democcratic campaign and at the J
same (time conduct his campaign j
here for the senate.
Dr. B. F. Jones will give a barbe-1
cue today at Mr. Walter Samuel's
mill in compliment to the Methodist
Sunday school and ' some of his
friends. For several years Dr. Jones
has given a private barbecue in July
to which he invited some of his clos
est friends, giving them a day of
genuine pleasure. The writer deeply
regrets his inability to be present to
day. Having attended these very
pleasant occasions ""in the past we
know what we shall miss.
A Sad Event.
Mrs. Sallie Bryan was called sud
denly to Greenwood on Wednesday
to the funeral of her brother, Mr.
Edward Beale, who met death at his
own hands. Mrs. Bryan returned on
Saturday. Mr. Beale was buried foy
the side of his first wife. He left
four daughters and his wife. The
friends of Mrs. Bryan feel very deep
ly for her in this loss.

Mr. W. J. Hatcher of Johnston an
nounces this week that he has just
brought in three carloads of automo
biles only one of which is left for
sale. This is a 7-passenger Buick,
one of the very best cars to be
bought and one of the most popular.

an 8 cylinder, jus? overhauled and
put in good condition. He also has

On Tuesday, July 13, Miss Mary
?Lewis accompanied by her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Allen, and broth
er, John, went to Glenn Springs in
their car. Miss Mary intends to stay
about three weeks but Mr. and Mrs
Allen and John returned Saturday,
the 17th.

I has been visiting her daughters, Mrs

Street.
The young people of Stevens
Creek church meet in the different
homes on Saturday evening to prac
tice singing. After singing for a
while they play games for amuse
ment.

Some say that the small worms
found in the cotton squares will de
velop into small green worms, others
say they become bugs, but let's not
call them boll weevils until we are
sure.

Don't Be Too Cock-Sure.
"You're wrong! I know positively
thus and so to be a fact."
Ever hear anybody talk like that?
Well, you heard a man who was
rapidly getting "in bad."
It's those blanket statements, so
very positive, set forth a little loud
er than usual, that do it.
They convince folks of only one
thing, namely, that there is some
thing about the speaker which they
don't like.
A great m.^ny innocent people are
getting themselves "in bad" by
spouting positive statements without
supporting proof.
They don't have many friends and
'don't know that it is this habit of
speech which makes them so unpop
ular.
If you really want to make a point
or put over an argument, you can do
it much more forcefully by asking
questions that will bring out the
strong points in your favor, or the
weak points in the opposition.
In answering them, the other side
of the argument defeats itself.
You win your point without an
tagonizing any one.
If you are inclined to argue, it is
a good plan to remember that there
has never been a debate in which the
debaters themselves have been con
