The Mule. The mule is almost a gentlemai He can boast that his father was gentleman of leisure, and never ui der any circumstances can he mali an ass of himself. People unacquainted with mule think the clipped mane and shave tail natural equipment, but these ar marks of servitude. A mule has a good time while he is a colt, but his latter end is bitter. Bitter also is the experience of those who monkey with a mule's latter end, for that is where his heavy artillery is mounted. He is not effective at long range, but those who engage him at close quarters are gathrered to their fathers. When the mule clears for action he bares his teeth and exposes the whites of his eyes. This is technically known as a feint. The unwary, expectant mischief from the weapons flourished, takes no thought of the guns mounted aft. Men say the mule is stubborn, but this is libel. He has convictions con cerning this new doctrine of self de termination and occasionally makes futile effort to express an opinion of those who gee or haw without the consent of the governed, but this is not stubbornness. It is democracy. Before we abolished the war and greed and human nature and such things, papers of state at times re ferred to stubborn and rebellious peoples who objected to a boss. In this bright new era even a mule may have rights. If we cannot grant him full liberty we can at least call him a mandatory instead of a mule and let him understand that we are plow ing him for his own good, without ulterior motive.-Saturday Evening Post. The examination for the award of I vacant scholarships in the University J of SoUvh Carolina and for admission of new students will be held at the county Court House on Friday, July ' 6, at 9 a. m. Applicants must not be less than sixteen years of age. When scholarships are vacant after July 9, they will be awarded to those making the highest average at examination, provided they meet the conditions governing the award. Applicants for scholarships should write to Presi dent Currell for scholarship examina tion blanks. These blanks, properly filled out by the applicant should be filed with President Currell by July 12. Scholarships are worth $100, free tuition and fees, total $158.
