Treated Hospitably at John ston and Do Much Business. ?apt. E. P. Gaines and Lieut. B. R. Stroup arrived yesterday afternoon at 6:30 from Johnston where, they have heen since Monday, making the trip of 50 miles in 32 minutes. The two aviators, left Saturday in the Curtiss Oriole airplane for Au gusta, where they stayed, tarrying passengers and introducing the three' seated machine until Monday after noon, when they went to Johnston, where an excellent business was done. Visitors from Edgefield and j \ Trenton with which Johnston forms a triangle on the map were frequent and many citizens of all three towns \ took their first trip in an aeroplane. ! The flying was very successful. Mark Tony, automobile dealer of Johnston, accompanied the Columbia pilots from that town. Mr. Toney is considering purchasing an airplane for his native village, but has not yet defienitely decided. But it would seem that in the near future South Carolina will be as mottled as the pro verbial leopard with flying apparatus. Captain Gaines and Lieut. Stroup report a warm if not a dry reception in Johnston and are much pleased with the trip. The hospitality of the community was such that only two meals had to be purchased in coin of the realm and the business done was excellent. The program of the local flyers is not as yet complete. Today they leave for Greenville, where they have an engagement for the Fourth of July celebrations. The flight for the Mountain City will be started at 4 o'clock this afternoon. The latter part of next week they will go to Wrightsville Beach and take passen gers on' the sandy shores at low tide. --The State. ? . j . ? - 1 ' Fall Irish Potatoes. Clemson College, June 26.-Though grown and appreciated by few, the second or fall crop of potatoes, through its superior table and keep ing qualities is of greater importance in the home garden than is the spring crop. It may be grown either from ttubers of the previous year's crop or .from those of the spring crop of the "current year. Best results are obtain ed from potatoes held over from the last year's crop; but if these are not 'available, seed of the current sea Son's crop may be used. For this prop there is no better va riety ?than Lookout Mountain, Next Yorker. Where none of these vari eties can be obtained, it will be nec essary to fall back on spring pota toes. TH? small potatoes from the first crop can be used as seed for the second crop if necessary. The fall crop should be planted any time from July 15 to August Ik depending upon climatic conditions. It requires 12 to 14 weeks for pota toes to mature from seed, and there fore they must be planted that much ahead of the earliest frost date. The preparation, fertilization and planting of the second crop are the same as for the first crop except that the seed are put down in a water furrow and covered a little deeper than with the spring crop. Frequent shallow cultivation is necessary for good results. Potato bugs are usually very de structive to the second crop and of ten destroy young plants as soon as they come up.
