McCormick, June ll.-At a meet ing of representative citizens of Mc Cormick county held here this at which every qualified voter resid ing in the proposed rerritory to annexed to McCormick county present, plans were perfected to in motion the machinery to survey the six miles of Edgefield county bor dering on Savannah river from about three fourths of a mile below Meri wether to a point near the power . company's dam below Furey's ferry At this meeting, and before a man left the house, the necessary sum of money was raised to defray all ex penses of survey and election, and committees were appointed and in structed as to their dunties, which began right then and there. A peti tion to the governor for an election will be presented in a very few days In the ?xtreme southern end of Edgefield county and adjoining Mc Cormick county, there are about 3 miles of road from McCormick coun ty to Furey's ferry. On the Georgia side in Columbia county, are several miles of the same kind of road which breaks the link of good roads from Greenwood to Augusta via McCor mick. This road, however, is 10 milers shorter than any other road from here to Augusta. Furey's ferry being an ideal lc cation for the bridge, plans are on foot to organize a stock company and build ope there, if it can not be done otherwise. This will give a complete line with the Dixie Highway with many advantages over the present official location of this Dixie High way, one among them being the fact that the railroad can be reached from any point in less than 15 minutes and at the same time autoists can find ga rages and filling stations every few miles. The people of McCormick coun ty have never felt that they were treated exactly right about the loca tion of the Dixie Highway along its |s present route and when this road is completed, official or no official Dix ie highway, the travel will necessarily come the shortest and best road where" accomodation will be at their command, it is believed here. At present the people in this pro posed area have to go by Meriwether or Woodlawn and Augusta to get to Edgefield, their county seat, travel ing a distance of 40 or 50 miles, .whereas they can come to McCor -mick by automobile in less than an hour or by rail at a distance of about 21 mlies and not have to leave the state to get to their county-seat | c ?ither way. I c Hottest June 13 in Augusta's History. Augusta's temperature, mercurial ly speaking, yesterday, smashed all the records for June 13 that Weather Prophet Emigh has stowed away in his archives. The Fahrenheit ther mometer in Mr. Emigh's sanctum re corded a maximum for the day of 100 degrees the hottest June 13 since the United States Weather Bureau knew Augusta was on the map. And what made it all harder to bear was the fact that it was altogether out of line with the equable climate that is in boast of the city by the Savannah. No reports have come in of anyone trying to fry an egg on Broad street pavement but it could have been done-at a great saving "of cafe ser vice. Newspaper reporters'enjoy certain privileges among which is the right to tell the people how hot it is or was without suffering violence. So here goes. At 8 o'clock last night, Augusta registered 94 degrees. At the same time Savannah was 80, Boston 60 and San Antonio 72 degrees. Other places in the United States were cor respondingly cooler. New Orleans was 84 degrees and San Francisco 62. Watch for an increase in temper ature at San Francisco in about two ?weeks. The mean temperature yesterday in Augusta was 87 degrees, or 16 de grees above normal. So far this year, the temperature has been a great deal below normal. Phoenix is recorded on the weather ibureau report as "missing." A troop of calvary will be sent out to locate it this morning, and some report about the city should reach here by tonight if the heat has not burned it ?up. , Washington had a temperature of 70 degrees at 8 o'clock last night.
