How to Determine Weevil In

interested in the suggestions made
by Prof. A. F. Conradi, Entomologist
of the State Crop Pest Commission,
concerning determining the amount
of weevil infestation as referred to
in Information Card No. 7 entitled
"Boll Weevil Poisoning in South Car
olina in 1920." Following is an ex
planation of a simple method for de
termining weevil infestation.
Make counts of 100 squares or
forms at each of five points of the
field. These points should be proper
ly distributed in order to represent
average conditions. One point should
be near each corner and one near
the center o:! the field.
Examine the squares or forms on
the plants, not on the ground. Dur
ing each count of 100 squares pull
off those that are punctured but let
those not punctured remain on the
plant. The punctured squares may be
put in a small sack. After the count
at each point has been completed,
the punctued squares should be count
ed, recorded, and then discarded so
that they will not confuse counts at
other points. At the completion of
counts at the five points, an average
-percentage of punctured squares
should be made.
To simplify this work a hand tally
counter may be bought. This little
instrument can be used to great ad
vantage in so far as it does all the
counting by just pressing a small
lever with the finger as each square
is counted. It saves much head work.
These tally counters can generally
he obtained from hardware stores.
In making the counts at each point
of the field -it is not necessary to
count all of the squares ' on each
stalk. Count an average number
from each stalk from several rows at
that point. It is usually best to start
counting on the second or third row
from the edge of the field and about
the same distance from the end of
the rows at each corner of the field.
Change of Dates For Short
Course.
Clemson College, June 14.-A
change in the dates of the short
course for club boys has been made,
.and the course will be given July 13
to 23 inclusive instead of as formerly
announced. Club boys are urged to
remember that this opportunity is
cj^jg-jgji all club members, the pro
vision being that two winning mem
bers from each county are given
scholarship and any others who at
tend pay evpenses. The scholarship
boys have only their railroad fare
to pay, while others attending pay
also a small fee of one dollar per
per day. The total expense therefore,
even for those who pay this fee, will
not be great, an devery club boy who
can should seize the opportunity to
spend a wholesome, pleasant and
profitable vacation.
The instruction given will cover
the various phases of practical agri
culture, and will be given by regular
members of the agricultural faculty.
The lectures and other class instruc
tion will be confined to mornings, the
afternoons to be devoted to practical
demonstrations in field, barn, and or
chard and to recreation. Special at
tention is to be given to recreation
and an opportunity to know about
the institution and its work as a
whole
Last year a Lancaster county club
boy attended the short course, kept
his eyes open and later went down to
the State fair in Columbia and won a
$100 prize in the livestock judging
contest. This year there will be se
lected from those who attend the
short course three boys making the
highest record in livestock raising
to represent the boys' club of South
Carolina in the livestock judging con
test at Southern fair in Atlanta next
fall. The team that scores the highest |
in this contest and the boy that|
makes the highest score will be given j
a free trip to England to attend the !
Royal livestock show in London. I
Boys in all classes of club work
may attend the Royal Livestock show
in London. Information concerning
the short course can be obtained
from the county agent in each coun
ty.

?Recognition Extended Mexico.
Washington, June 13. For all
[practical purposes the new.Mexican
I government has been recognized at
the state department, and the new
regime is in touch" with the United
States.
The Mexican embassy here has
been turned over to Dr. Felix Torre
I Diaz, as charge d'affaires of the pro
visional Mexican government.
Mr. Salvador Diego Fernandez,
Carranza' charge d'affaires left here
this morning for Mexico City. He
has turned over to?JDr. Torre Diaz all
of the funds of the embassy and all
the powers by order of the provision
al President De La Huerta. The new
charge has made no change in the
' embassy staff and business is run
ning along smoothly between the two
governments.
Introduced to State Dept.
In was learned here today that Dr.
Torre Diaz was introduced at the
Mexican division of the state depart
ment yesterday by Mr. Fernandez,
who up to that time had been acting
! as the representative of Carranza. '
This act is about the last which
signalizes the total collapse of the re
gime in Mexico which was set up
during the first administration of
President Wilson. In many official
ways are Carranza government has
been saved from an actual outbreak
with the United States by unexpect
ed turns of diplomacy at the White
I House.
Caused Resignation of Lansing.
The last efforts of the White
House to prop up the decadent Car
jranza minority caused the resigna
tion of Secretary Lansing and Henry
jP. Fletcher, the United States am
bassador to Mexico, who during the
President's illness undertook to de
mand from Carranza an acknowledge
ment of the rights of W. 0. Jenkins,
a consulate agent of this country
who had been jailed and persistently
harassed by the ^courts and petty of
ficials of the Carranza government.
Carranza won in the triangular
fight between him, the White House
and the state department.
The outlook today appears to be
that the new government is able
enough to demand the recognition
of all nations.
