Platform Makers Busy at Chicago. Chicago, June 6.-With the conven tion circle of party leaders virtually complete, the Republican platform builders went seriously to work to night on the more troublesome of the planks remaining to be fashioned. One of these was the declaration on the treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations, a subject of long standing disagreement and bitter con troversy. Another dealt with the in dustrial relations, bringing into- con trast widely diverse schools of eco nomic thought. A third related to Mexico, always a topic of debate, and now somewhat complicated by recent developments south of the Rio Grande. On all of these entire harmony was predicted by all the party leaders, al though most of them conceded that some interesting scrimmages possi bly reaching the convention floor would haye to be fought out before there could be an agreement. With the belated arrival from Washington of several senators, rep resenting extremes of Republican opinion on the treaty, the long senate fight over the League of Nations vir tually was transferred to the con ference rooms here. Treaty Planks. The irreconcilables and the mild reservationists of the senate are pre pared for a hard battle on the treaty plank. Senator Borah, of Idaho, a, leader of the irreconcilables, arrived late in the day with a plank which will have the backing of the Johnson forces. The mild reservationists held numerous conferences and prepared to draft a plank for submission to Ogden Mills, chairman of the execu tive committee on policies and plat forms. "We will submit our plank to the resolutions committee," said Senator Borah, "and if we do not see it in .the platform we will offer it in the convention." Senator Borah was not ready to make the Johnson-Bor?h plank pub lic, but said it would be presented to the resolutions committee. It was learned that the mild reser vationists plank would demand a con structive policy fpr ratification of the Versailles treaty with protective res ervations and an endorsement of the stand of senators who voted for the Lodge reservations. Senator Lodge, who arrived late today, deferred con ferences on the treaty, but predicted thai., an agreement between the va rious groups would be reached. Mexican Question. With the plank on Mexico in. its formative stage there was a general feeling that little trouble would be encountered in bringing an agree ment. The declarations prepared at Washington by Senator Fall, of Mex ico, however, providing for American intervention unless Mexico mended its ways, ran into some opposition, and it was suggested that it might be modified to omit altogether thc ref erence to possible military interfer ence by this government in the south ern republic. In thai case the plank would de clare that recognition of the new re gime in Mexico City should be with held until certain guarantees had been made. There also would be in attack on 'President Wilson's Mexi can policy and a general statement on the necessity of protecting Ameri can rights. Two former American am bassadors to Mexico, Henry P. Fletch er, of Pennsylvania, and Henry Lane Wilson, of Indiana, are in consulta tion here in consultation with others on the subject. Shaping the industrial relations plan revived many old animosities and brought into focus several of the issues raised by recent strikes and un rest. On this plank the supporters of Senator Johnson are generally ex pected to have a program of their own and various other elements of the party are counted on to bring in proposals that will run counter to the views of some delegates. None of these elements has yet disclosed its band, however, and the whole sub ject is influx. Agricultural Affairs. Organized agricultural interests to day planned their campaign to urge adoption of platform planks dealing with agricultural enterprises, Presi dent C. S. Barrett and other offieers of the national board of farm or ganizations, meeting and appointing committees to present their cause to the resolutions committee. The platform committee is expect ed to adopt virtually unchanged rec ommendations respecting agriculture of the national committee's body on platforms and policies headed by Sen ator Caper of Kansas.
