Closing Exercise of Flat Rock ' School. Friday a goodly number of people of the Flat Rock and adjoining com munities came together for the beau tiful closing exercises of the school which has been well taught the past session by Mrs. J. M. Bussey and Mrs. Fannie Cobia.. The exercises were opened with prayer by Mr. J. M. Bussey who acted as master of ceremonies. As the subjoined pro gram will show, practically all of the children of the school took part in the miscellaneous programme, every number of which was well rendered and reflected credit upon the ? pupils and the very faithful and capable teachers. At the conclusion of the exercises by the children, addresses were made by Mr. W. W. Fuller, the very wor thy county superintendent of educa tion, and Mr. J. L. Mims. Mr. Fuller referred to the fact that the Flat Rock school district was the first in the county to vote o special school levy and urged the patrons of the % school to increase their school levy to eight mills so'as to conform to the recently enacted law which provides for State aid. As explained^by Mr. Fuller, through this act evelry school in the county and States can provide sufficient funds to pay their teach ers adequate salaries. The new building which houses the Flat Rock school is a lasting credit to the patrons of the school and to the people of the community. It is large, conveniently arranged, well lighted and well ventilated. The, following is the program of the exercises : Song-Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean-By the school. At the conclusion of the program -.all were invited to gather around a .'large table on the school \rounds -where a sumptuous feast was served, ' there being a sufficiency for more .than double the number of persons in attendance. The editor of The Ad vertiser is greatly indebted to the ;good people of the Flat Rock com nmunity, now one of the most pro gressive communities in the county, for a verypleasant day. Thirty-Four Men Pass Physical Examination for Tank Com pany. Captain Hastings Wyman, Jr., Medical Reserve Corps of the United States Army came to Edgefield last Monday and spent the afternoon and evening examining the members of the tank company. Capt. Wyman put thirty-seven men through the "grill" and all but three successful ly passed the examination. Quite a number of men who have enlisted were unable to take the physical ex amination Monday but will take it jn the near future. i Recruiting for the tank company sf going forward and every indica ron points towards Edgefield secur ng the company. Already more men lave been enlisted that is required 'or the headquarters and the enlist nent of the personnel for the first jlatoon is proceeding rapidly. Thirty wo men compose a platoon while :orty five make up the headquarters ?ection. As soon as fifteen or twenty more nen are recruited Capt. Wyman will .eturn and give another examination, jast Monday he was assisted by Dr. boulton of Aiken, Doctors Marsh, Nicholson and Tompkins of Edge ield. Quite a number of men from the :ounty have enlisted and it is grati fying to see the interest the men :rom out of town are taking. Recruiting will continue during :he week and all men who want to lelp swing the compemy for Edge ield are requested to see Lieuts. A. B. Carwile, T. B. Greneker, B. F. iones or Captain J. 0. The pupils have been beautifully trained by their teachers, the Masses Rowland and Miss Eleanor Hook, and the success of the exercises will be much heightened by music ren dered by musicians from Augusta. All who are interested in the school and neighborhood are invited and sevei-al motor parties are expect ed from different parts of the two counties. No admission will be charged but light refreshments will be sold on the grounds. Death of an Aged Woman. Mrs. Martha Carpenter Whitlock, who for more than fifty years had been the wife of Mr. At. C. Whit lock, died on Saturday, May l,ard l'was buried Sunday morning in tte cemetery at Philippi Baptist church, of which she was a member. Had ehe have lived until September 7 she would have been eighty years of age. She had been sir.k for sev eral months prior to her death, and she bore jer sufferiugs with great Christian fortitude. A good wo man has gone to her reward. Highway Commission Met. In response to the call of the del egation, the recently 'aDpointed members of the Edgefield Highway Commission raett in the court house Monday and organized by the elec tion of Mr. W. M. Sawyer chair man and Mr. Geo. W. Scott secre tary. The member? of the com mission were all present exoept Mr. L. Ry Brun9on, Sr., and Mr. Wal ter W. Wise. The work of the commission was discussed in a gen eral way but nothing definite was undertaken at this meeting. An other meeting of the Highway Com mission will be held at Edgefield May 14.
