Now that the subscriptions to the Baptist 75 Million Campaign have passed the $90,000,000 mark, leaders In all the states composing the terri tory of the Southern Baptist Conven tion have resolved to place this sum at (100,000,000 by the meeting of the Con tention at Washington early in May. lt is also planned to bring the total of cash offerings by that time to $20,000, 100. The convention at Washington sill be the ssventy-fifth session of that body and it is deemed appropriate to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the organization with an enlarged sub scription and cash sum with which to carry forward the missionary, educar ?ional and benevolent work fostered by the convention in all parts of th? rorld. f DR. Th- reports on the original drive for funds in the 75 Million Campaign to date, as made by th? several states, follow: Alabama, $4,100,000; Arkan sas, $2,265,000. District of Columbia, $250,000; Florida, $1,370,392; Georgia, $10,100,000; Southern Illinois, $830,704; Kentucky, $7,167,713; Louisiana, $2, 875,000; Maryland. $907,760; Missis sippi, $4,144,902; Missouri, $2,062,506; New Mexico. $732,260, North Carolina, 17,250,000; Oklahoma, $3,200,000; South Carolina, $7,554,772; Tennessee, $5, 010,000; Texas, $16,560.000; Virginia, $8,298,488. Returns from the foreign mission fields and other sources not included in the above bring the total subscriptions beyond $90,000,000. This vast sum of money was raised at a total expense of three-quarters of one per cent, making this probably the Itnost economically conducted campaign Un the history of the country. Plan Evangelistic Campaign, j Prior to this effort for additional subscriptions and cash, however, a South-wide campaign of evangelism, stewardship and emphasis upon the Ifnndamental doctrines of religion is planned for the month of March and the first three weeks In Apri!, when the churches will employ their organ ized forces In seeking to win to Christ (nany thousands of the 20,000,000 people within the territory of the Southern Baptist Convention who are not affil iated with any church. A day of pray, er in behalf of the success of every Item on the Baptist program for the spring and summer of 1920 has been set apart. Many of the states have al ready got their evangelistic campaigns well under way. In the hope of arousing as large in terest as possible, city-wide, county wide and associational campaigns of soul-winning have been planned in many places. In other places, espe cially the rural districts, where the summer months are considered more desirable for evangelistic work, the special program will be deferred until July and August. This will make it possible for city pastors to aid the rural pastors and thus double the evan gelistic force of the denomination. The program of evangelism, steward ship and emphasis upon the fundamen tal doctrines of religion is calculated to conserve the victory achieved in the campaign for funds. Washington.-Calling for the patrl I otic support of all time Americans ir Its fight to protect their homes, re Hgion and property from the spread ing menace of Bolshevism, the United States Department of Justice has is sued a warning against the Insidious propaganda of the "Reds" during the new year. It reads : "It would be extremely helpful to the cause of good government, the main tenance of law and order and the pres ervation of peace and happiness in our country If the people on this New Year's day would resolve to study, un derstand and appreciate the so-called 'Red' movement They can counter act lt most effectively by teaching Its purpose through the press, the church, the schools, patriotic organizations and labor unions, all of which are within the rangt of Its insidious attacks. '.Red" Theories Criminal. "The 'Red' movement does not mean an attitude of protest against alleged defects In our present political and economic organization of society. It does not represent the radicalism of progress. It represents a specific doc trine-namely, the Introduction of dic tatorships the world over by force and violence. It is not a movement of lib erty-loving persons, but a distinctly criminal and dishonest movement. Lenlne himself made the statement at the Third Soviet Conference, 'Among one hundred so-called Bolshevists there is one real Bolshevik, thirty-nine crim inals and sixty fools.' It advocates the destruction of all ownership in proper ty, the destruction of all religion and belief In God. It is a movement or ganized against Democracy and in fa vor of the power of the few built by force. Bolshevism, syndicalism, the Soviet Government, sabotage, etc., are only names for old theories of violence and criminality. ?"..*" Russian Labor Crushed. .Though their adherents in this coun try are advocating and fomenting* strikes, Lenlne and Trotzky forbid strikes, and trade unions are being broken up and completely subordinated to the will of the few demagogues in control in Russia. This Bolshevist ex periment on the living body of the Russian people has not proven In any sense of the word an experiment in Democracy. The Bolshevist leaders, frankly repudiate democratic princi ples as we understand them. It bas been a gamble which meant for Rus sia, and, indeed, for the whole of hu manity, enormous losses in lives as well as in material resources. The Bolshevists have run up a colossal bill which the Russian workmen and peas ants will have to pay. "Reds" Menace America. "Having lived at the expense of th? Russian people for two years, these speculators in human lives and other people's earnings are trying to move to new fields to the east and to the west, hoping to take advantage of the economic distress and confusion of mind in which humanity finds itself after the terrific strain of five years of war. "Its sympathizers In this country are composed chiefly of criminals, mis taken idealists, social bigots and many unfortunate men and women suffering with varying forms of hyperesthesla. They are enemies of the government, cf the church and of the home and ad vocate principles which mean the aboli tion of all three of these safeguards of civilization. Would Rob Everybody. 'Twenty million people in this coun try own Liberty Bonds. These the 'Reds* propose to take away; 9,830,000 people in the United States own farms and 3,838,000 more own homes, which they would forfeit ; 11,000,000 odd peo ple have savings accounts in savings banks and 18,000,000 people have de posits In our national .banks, at, which they aim. There are hundreds of thou sands of churches and religious insti tutions, all of which they would abol ish. In other words, 110,000,000 hard working and saving people who own i property, love liberty and worship God are asked to abandon all the ideals of religion, liberty and government, which are the outcome of the struggles of their fathers and their own develop ment, and to place themselves, their homes, their family and their religious faith in the keeping and their property under the domination of a small group of Lenlnes and Trotzkys. Protection Promised. 'This department, as far as existing laws allow, Intends during the forth coming year to keep up an unflinching, persistent, aggressive warfare against any movement, no matter how cloaked or dissembled, having for Its purpose either the promulgation of these Ideas or the excitation of sympathy for those who spread them. The move ment will not'be permitted to go far enough In this country to disturb our peace and well-being or create any widespread ..distrust of the people's governemnt. It will fall away before the light of popular knowledge and appreciation of its alms and purposes.'1 AMERICANS ASKED TO STAY AT il SIGHTSEERS SHOULD KEEP OUT OF EUROPE UNTu PEOPLE GET ON FEET AGAIN. BAPTISTS ENLARGE WORK Mission Secretary Will Recommend How Evangelistic, Educational and Benevolent Program Can Be Carried Out. Americans should keep out of Eur ope, unlees they have important busi ness* there, until Europeans have had an opportunity to get on their feet again, declares Dr. J. F. Love, secre tary of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Dr. Love, as chairman of a commis sion named by the Baptist 75 Million Campaign to visit Europe and make a survey of the mission fields there, has Just returned from a five months' tour of the continent. He says Americans have distributed cash with such a lav ish hand in many places on the conti nent that the people have become con vinced that every American has money to throw away and as soon as they spot a citizen from this country they proceed to overcharge him for every thing he buys and every service ren dered. Unless Americans forego sight-seeing in Europe for a few years a lot of the natives there will become professional beggars, in Dr. Love'i opinion. Baptists Suffered Heavily. Along with the other religious de nominations Baptists suffered heavy losses of property in Europe during the war, Dr. Love reports, but he found that such Baptists as survived the war remained loyal to their convictions and they are now ready to welcome the aid and co-operation of American Bap tists In the rehabilitation of their coun tries and the propagation of the gospel. From the contact formed with the Baptists of the chief countries of Eur ope by these representatives of the Southern Baptist Convention Dr. Love believes there will ultimately be formed a co-operative alignment of the Baptists of the world that will make them larger factors in world evangeli sation than they have ever been be fore. Carry on Relief Work. 1 * While the program which Southern Baptists will carry on in the European countries which they have not occu pied before will not be determined un til after the commission has reported to the Foreign Mission Board, members of the commission found crying need for money with which to meet cases demanding immediate relief and cabled home for funds to be employed in this connection In northern France and Belgium. This money was promptly forwarded and has been distributed through an agency set up in Paris in conjunction with the Foreign Mission ary Society of the Northern Baptist Convention. Prior to the visit of this commission, missionary work by South ern Baptists in Europe has been con fined to Italy and Bohemia. However, the commission visited England, Scot land, France, Belgium, Holland and Italy, but found it impossible to get Into Czecho-Slovakla, the Balkans and Russia at this time. Palestine and Egypt Visited. After the tour of Europe had been completed, the commission, which in cluded Dr. Z. T. Cody, editor of the Baptist Courier, of Greenville, S. C., and Dr. Everett Gill, formerly mission ary to Italy, but now a pastor in Kan sas City, went to Palestine to look into the missionary work there formerly done by the Baptists of Southern Illi nois, but recently taken over by the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. A trip into Egypt for the purpose of studying the Moham medan situation was made by the party while awaiting a ship on which to re turn to Italy. So far, Christianity has made very little inroad on Mohamme danism anywhere Dr. Love found, though some of the missionary agen cies In Palestine have been established for more than a half century. He an ticipates a better chance for the Chris tian religion there, following British occupation of that country. Establish Orphanage in Rome. By reason of the liberal response from the native Christians in the vari ous mission fields to the 75 Million Campaign, many improvements on those fields have been made possible. Among the enlargements already pro vided for are an orphanage in Rome, the addition of a Ri'rls' department at Rio College in Brazil, and land for a girls' school at Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Interior China Mission was asked for $7,500 for the campaign, and the missionaries there subscribed this alone, while the native converts added $4,500. The North China Mission has subscribed $50,000, while Brazil will respond with nearly $1,000,000. In South Brazil the campaign as it was carried on in the South, was duplicated with all the special days and other ex traordinary efforts and the response is far beyond the anticipations of the Foreign Mission Board.
