How Enforced Prohibition
Will Help Our Country.
(Prize Essay written by Miss Noni
Morgan in the W. C. T. U. contest.;
How will enforced prohibition hel]
our country! It will help in man;
ways; First, we would think of hov
it will help the man who drinks whis
key. It will put him on a higher plaii
morally, mentally and financially.
Many a good man's morals have
been ruined by whiskey. Many a gooc
woman and her children have suffer
ed from the lack of food and. clothing
on account of a drunkard husband
and father. Many a man would have
brought his,children up in Sunday
School and church if it had not been
for drink. It kept his family away
from church because they had no
way to go nor sufficient clothing to
wear. Prohibition is bringing about
a great change in this way.
Many bright minds have been ruin
ed xby the effects of a drunken father,
even extending into the third and
fourth generation, so any one can
see the depth of drunkeness. Many a
big-hearted, bright boy's mind has
been fired by the use of whiskey. Our
peniteniaries are full of them today,
that would have been good citizens
if we had had prohibition twenty
years ago.
Prohibition does not make murder
w
ers or thieves. No doubt if we had
had prohibition in time of the Civil
War-as we had in the late war-the
Confederate soldiers would have
won, although they were outnumber
ed by a great majority.
'Prohibition will help the old men,
middle-aged men, young men and
boys, thereby making us proud of
the future generation, that we are
striving to make 100 per cent. Chris
tian Americans.
Prohibition will help the old men.
So many of our old Confederate sol
diers were in the habit of drinking
alcoholic drinks, and doing without
whiskey in their declining years, will
.help them to live a better life and
prepare themselves for the Vast Be
yond.
Prohibition will help the middle
aged men, because those that have
boys of their own, will be able to
lead them to be better men, as boys
are apt to follow in their fathers'
footsteps. I have seen before now a
man's daught .rs ashamed of their
father in town or out at public gath
erings. Sometimes a father that
drinks whiskey invites young men to
drink with him. even invites them
into his home where his daughters
are. Oftimes causes men not to have
respect for his daughters as they
should have.
Prohibition will benefit the young
man, because on Sundays he will go
to church and not off on a drunken
spree. He will be in better company
at church than he would at a card
table or at a pool room. It throws him
with the highest class of people. My
advice to man, instead of drinking
whiskey, is to drink a glass of water.
In ancient times, in drinking in hon
or of a friend, it was the custom to
take as many cups as there was let
ters in the name. The Greeks drank
first, in honor of their Gods, and then
in honor of their friends. A frequent
number was three, in honor of the
Graces, and nine, in honor of the
Muses. My advice to the men of
Edgefield county is to emulate their
example by drinking pure water.
An example which it will be well for
you to heed. "There is no lurking de
mon in a glass of pure water. Its
use brings no sorrow in premature
death. Temperance is a bridle of
gold. He who uses it rightly is more
like a god than a nlan, moderation
is the silken string, running through
the pearl chain of all virtues."
One of the greatest ways in which
prohibition will help, is to our boys
that are growing up. We hope that
it will be enforced so that they will
never know what a drink of whiskey
is. It will enable them to grow strong
er, morally, mentally and physically.
lt will turn them into a different
channel altogether. It will enable
them to never fill a drunkard's grave.
If we had had prohibition ever
since the Civil War, Edgefield coun
ty would be blooming with wealth
and prosperity. Think of so many
homes that have been mortgaged and
lost, of the poor mothers and chil
dren that have had to leave their lov
ed ones on account of a drunkard
husband and father. If the money
that has been spent for whiskey in
our county had been put in building
roads we would have better roads to
day.
Some of the farmers are grieving
about the boll weevil, but whiskey
has done more harm than any weevil
could do. The boll weevil can be over
come by planting other crops but
whiskey can only be overcome by
Enforced Prohibition.
Prohibition helps the man who
sold whiskey. It will enable some of
them, at least, to enter into the Great
