Dr. and Mrs. C. C. Timmons re cently visited the home folks at Cle ora. Mr. Preston L. Earle of Spartan ?burg was a visitor to Edgefield this week. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Mathis of Tren ton are in Florida for a stay of two ?nonths. Mrs. Lucinda Sewell of Augusta spent several days with her brother, Mr. S. A. Brunson, this week. Rev. Mahlon Padgett of Saluda is visiting his son and daughter, Mr. E. E. and Miss Pearl Padgett. Miss Julia Wise of Trenton, who has a business position in Columbia, was in Edgefield several days ago. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Quarks United with the Baptist church Sunday morning, bringing their letters from Antioch. Mrs. Susan B. Hill has returned to Washington after several weeks in Edgefield with her sister, Mrs. W. C. Tompkins. / Senator J. C. Sheppard and Hon. J. L. Mims left for their duties in the Senate and House of Representatives early this week. Mr. Joe Young of Due West, Mr. W. T. Davis of Wyoming and Mr. Henry Davis of Abbeville were week end guests of Mr. A. B. Young. Mr. and Mrs. Norwood Cleveland returned to their home in Greenville today, having spent several weeks here with Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Padgett A lovely little girl, Anna Belle, named for her grandmother and aunt on her mother's side, has come into the home of Dr. and Mrs. A. H. Cor ley. Mr. Bettis Cantelou has just re turned from an eight days trip to Kentucky where he made some splen did investments, which are advertis ed in this issue. . - ... .. -,. ^ The Saluda, Standard of this week announces the extreme illness of Hon W. L. Daniel from pneumonia. We hope that his condition has already changed for the better. Mr. Bettis Cantelou is remodeling and beautifying his residence, re cently purchased from Mr. Beaure gard Timmons. Several rooms will be added and water works installed. The regular monthly meeting of the Old Ninety Six District chapter, D. A. R. will be held at the home of Mrs. J. L. Mims, Tuesday afternoon, January 20th at 3:30 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs.. Israel Mukashy are erecting on the lot adjoining the res idence of Mr. and Mrs. Jerald La Grone, a new bungalow which is making rapid headway towards com pletion. Mrs. W. L. Dunovant went to Co lumbia today to attend the meeting of the Executive Board of the Wo man's Suffrage League, remaining over for several days with her daugh ter, Mrs. Oscar La Borde. Miss Lillian Smith returned to Co lumbia to-day to enter upon her du ties as teacher at the Logan School. Miss Smith was detained at home for several weeks on account of the ill ness of her mother, Mrs. Jake Smith. Rev. Henry Bell White resigned bis pastorates in Edgefield County on the past Sunday at the churches of Stevens Creek and Berea. Rocky Creek is also without a pastor, Rev. W. S. Brooke who has been serving them having resigned. These fields will be at a loss to know where to turn for some one to fill the pulpits bf these important churches. Nicholson went to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore on Monday ac companying Mrs. John Mobley of Johnston, and also Mrs. 0. P. Bright who went on to Belleview Hospital, New York for treatment. Dr. J. F. Mc-Grath, who married Miss Lillian Nicholson of Edgefield is now super intendent of this hospital. Dr. Nich olson will spend a few days with them before returning home. Dr. S. L. Morris of Beech Island, made a very strong ple:i for thc work of the An.i-Saloon League at the Baptist church on last Wednesday evening. The weather wa3 very in clement and few heard him. Another treat on this occasion was two vocal solos by Mr. Frank McCravy, one of the Home Board Evangelistic singers who gave two selections. He will re turn to Edgefield and give a concert on the fourth Sunday night in the Baptist church. - The South Carolina Legislature convened at 12 o'clock on Tuesday, this being the 73rd session. The mem bers of the House were welcomed back by Thomas P. Cothran of Green ville, speaker. A committee com posed of three representatives was ap pointed to notify Governor Cooper that th- louse was .in readiness to transact business. On this committee was Representative Berry, Orange burg; Representative Beacham, of Greenwood; Representative Mims of Edgefield. The South Carolina Senate ^t their first session Tuesday wer . record as endorsing the fight made by Woodrow Wilson for the Peace Treaty and the League of Nations. The resolutions were offered by Senator Sheppard and were passed unanimously. "The State" in speak ing of the introduction of this reso lution said that Mr. Sheppard sup ported it with his customary grace. The House later accepted the Sen ate resolution urging a speedy rati fication of the peace treaty and ex pressing sympathy for President Wil son in his indisposition. The ministers of the town have been requested by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union to preach a sermon on Sunday on the text "Righteousness Exalteth a Na tion," in celebration of the fact that our youth will no longer have the temptation of drink with the sanction of the nation. Rev. G. W. M. Taylor, Rev. Mr. Peatross and Revi E. C. Bailey will preach on this subject at the morning service. At the Baptist church Dr. Lee will use this subject in the evening, as Mr. Lanham will occupy the pulpit in the morning in the interests of the Y. . M. C. A. The Woman's Mission Society of the Baptist church has held three very interesting prayer services this iveek, led on -Monday afternoon by Mrs. Mamie N. Tillman, at which Mrs. Lovick Mims and Mrs. R. G. Lee jave a vocal duet. Tuesday afternoon was in charge )f Mrs. Lovick Mims and the special music was a vocal solo by Miss Eliz ibeth Rainsford, "The Plains of Peace," with piano accompaniment ay Miss Miriam Norris. Wednesday afternoon the program ivas led by Mrs. Abner Broadwater, with special music by Miss Miriam Norris, accompanied on the piano by Miss Genevieve Norris. Moving Pictures in Johnston. Mr. Thomas H. Wall, manager of the Edgefield Theatre, announces the taking over of the Theatre in Johnston, and will put on two pro grams weekly, Monday and Wednes day. Mr. Wall has had considerable experience in moving pictures and bas had some wonderful pictures at Edgefield and will also give Johnston the same excellent pictures as are being shown in Edgefield. Watch for further announcement. Celebrate Golden Anniversary Red Oak Grove church is planning to celebrate the golden anniversary of their pastor's ordination at that church in July of this year, to which all of the former members, hose who were members at that time, will be invited to attend. Arrangements for the occasion will begin soon. Nothing but bad roads will be an oc casion for this occasion to fail, says our correspondent In another col umn will appear the account of a delightful occasion given in Brother Bussey's honor. Rev. G. W. Bussey has been a faithful pioneer in all the Christian endeavors of our county for many, many years. , Addison Building Bought for Hospital. Edgefield has at last been fortu nate enough to secure a central and convenient location and building for the beginning of a hospital. The Ad dison building which was recently purchased from Mr. John L. and Miss Virginia Addison by Hon. J. Wm. Thurmond and W. A. Strom, has been re-sold for ten thousand dollars to the Directors of the Edgefield Hos pital Association. We are not as yet in possession of information in re gard to the future plans of work. The location is near the Baptist church and which Col. Bailey used for a dormitory for his school sev eral years. It was the former resi dence of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Addison. Baptist Parsonage Completed. The beautiful parsonage across the street from the Baptist church is completed and Dr. and Mrs. Lee are now occupying it. Dr. Lee pays it is the prettiest house in tow nd chal lenges every one with ?tty one to come and disprovr statement. He has invited ev vody to come and make themseh . at home, so that it is a sure enough "house hy the side of "the road," where he can be a friend to man. There is no doubt about it either, that there is a charm in going that way which did not ex ist a few days ago. There has always been a rivalry between the parallel streets leading to Buncombe and from time imme morial these . streets have been call ed respectively, "the back way" and "the front way." At last, we believe the back is coming to the front. And when the hospital is fully installed, all roads will lead this way, the sick going to be cured and the well to carry them sympathy. It is a gay sight already to see at morning and noon the troops of children in their gayly colored caps and sweaters thronging by going back and forth from school. Entertained for Visitors. Mrs. J. E. Walker entertained de lightfully on Monday evening with a dinner party in honor of her guests, Misses Lucy Timmerman and Sallie Mae Miller of Edgefield, S. C. The dining room and tables were decorated with yellow narcissus and poinsettias. Those invited were: Misses Henri etta and Ruth Douglass, Cynthia and Connie McGrady, Ruth and Mildred ""til, Winifred Quinan, Marguerite 'ark, Althea Waller, Florence Strait Dorothy Walker, Miss Dasher and Miss Coney. Mrs. J. C. Wilkering assisted MTS. Walker in serving.-Savannah Press Luncheon on New Year's Day Miss Althea Walker entertained yesterday with a New Year's lun cheon in honor of Miss Lucy Timmer man and Miss Sallie Mae Miller of Edgefield, S. C., who are the guests if Mrs. J. E. Walker. Those present were Miss Lucy rimmerm. Miss Sallie Mae Miller, Miss Ore Gooding, Miss Annie Leah Speas, Miss Dorothy Walker.
