All licenses shall be issued by the
:lerk as herein provided. If it be a
firm, shall contain the name of the
Firm proposing to do business under
same and all the names of individuals
composing such firm. If it be a cor
poration, it shall contain the name of
the corporation and officers of the
same.
Any person or persons carrying on
business or occupation or running
my establishment named in this or
preceding sections, without having
taken out license therefor as herein
provided, upon conviction shall be
fined not less than one dollar nor
more than one hundred dollars per
iay, or fraction thereof, or to be im
prisoned in the county jail or to be
sentenced to hard work on the streets
jr public works of the town for a pe
riod of not less than thirty days for
?ach day and every day, or fraction
thereof such business or profession
is carried without license. For any
business, calling, occupation or pro
fession not enumerated in the fore
going, a license tax of not more than
525.00 shall be paid to the clerk by
person, firm or corporation engaged
in or running same. All licenses is
sued under this ordinance ihall be
posted in a. conspicuous place on
premises where business or profession
is carried on, and, subject to inspec
tion at any and all times by the offi
cers of the town.
"Any persons failing to post said li
censes shall be subject to a fine of
not more than five dollars or impris
onment for not more than ten days.
Any firm or officer of any corpora
tion making fraudulent returns,
where a return under oath is by this
ordinance required, shall upon con
viction be fined not less than twenty
five dollars, nor more than fifty dol
lars, or be imprisoned not more than
thirty days nor less than ten days, at
the discretion of the mayor.
Any person, firm or corporation
liable to the license tax herein before
set forth, whose said tax is regulated
by the amount of business done or
the amount of stock carried, is re
quired to make a return under oath
to the clerk of the town council on,
or before the 15th day of August,
1919, and on failure so to do, such
person or officer or agent of such
firm or corporation shall be liable to
a fine not exceeding one hundred dol
lars or imprisonment not exceeding
thirty days for each and every day
or fraction thereof such person or of
ficer or agent aforesaid shall be in
default of making such returns.
The license on all dogs of every
age and sex has been reduced to fifty
bents and shall be due and pryable at
the same time with city "cense above
called for, to the t m clerk and
treasurer at his office in the rear of
Farmers Bank of Edgefield.
All licenses issued under the fore
going sections are non-transferable
and will only protect those to whom
they are given.

Loss of Appetite.
As a general rule there is nothing
serious about a loss of appetite, and
if you skip a meal or only eat two
meals a day for a few days you will
soon have a relish for your meals
when meal time corns. Bear in mind
that at least five hours should always
elapse between meals so as to give
the food ample time to digest and
the stomach a period of rest before a

Washington, July 25.-Immediate
sale of the $120,000,000 surplus
stock of foodstuffs held by the war
department under a plan which will
"insure opportunity for th e people
of the United States to buy" was rec
ommended to-day by the ten republi
can members of the house war inves
tigating committee. The five demo
cratic committeemen withheld de
cision, pending a review of evidence
taken by a sub-committee,.
"The inactivity of the government
in the indisposition of these food sup
plies was, and is, the result of a well
defined policy of the secretary of
war to withhold them from the domes
tic market and to protect the inter
ests from which these products had
been purchased," said the subcom
mittee, report drafted by Represen
tative Reavis, Nebraska and Mac
Gregor, New York, republicans.
Chairman Graham, of the full com
mittee, was instructed to ask for a
special rule on a resolution calling
upon the war department to sell the
goods. Efforts wdl be made to bring
the resolutions before the house next
Monday, Graham announced.
The report criticised on what it de
clared the department's "non-activ
ities of food supplies now held in
storage" and asserted that six months
elapsed before any surplus stock was
declared while "in the meantime the
food was deteriorating and becoming
of less value and the high cost of liv
ing continued."
The report also expressed "the sub
committee's disfavor of a policy of
export," and recommended that
"plans be devised by the secretary of
war through the war department for
the early disposition of all surplus
fod production on the domestic mar
ket."
The report estimated that on July
8, last, the value of surplus food
stored in the United State over and
above the needs of the army was as
follows:
Corn beef, $24,000,000; bacon,
$23,000,000; hash corn beef, $10,000
000; roast beef, $20,000,000; fresh
frozen meats and poultry, $20,000,
000; canned vegetables, $23,000,000.
