Ba?tle Scarred Task .fe? ?BEL- ? .^^^1 "No road is impassable, no stunt im possible." is the slogan of the crews of the twenty real battle tanks now touring the Fifth Federal Reserve Dis trict in the interest of the Victory Liberty Loan. These tanks, manned ; y crews who saw active service on the Western front, are of the six-ton whippet type, the kind that proved so efficient in battle. They are in full battle rega lia, even to the camouflage coat of paint. The turrets, from which the machine guns project, are arranged to revolve so that the guns may be quickly aimed in any direction. This feature, coupled with the great agility of the whippet tanks make them unusually effective in action. These agile steel terriers just "eat up" sticky spring roads, BO even the SHIEL m STANDS EID Samuel Gompers., for many years head of the labor movement in the United States and at present one of the leaders of the labor movement at the Peace Conference at Paris, urges labor, both organized and unorganized, to support the Victory Liberty Loan. He says in part: "The Victory Loan is the forerun ner of a happier statf of society, a guarantee of peace and tranquility of tie world, the hope of a better day and a brighter -light. I heartily join with my fellow c.'tizens in urging every worker and every organization of workers to take part in this splen did effort to finance our democracy's peace with the wealth and savings of all our people. Gold is the basis of all credit. The United States is now about to enter a fifth great popular campaign for the sale of government bonds to the citi zens of the nation. America has con tracted more than $5,000.000.000 of debt since last November in paying war bills, and this money must be rais ed by the people. Every reader of this paper knows that United States government bonds are the safest investment on earth. But many of them do not, perhaps, know just how to explain their belief. One of the reasons why United .States government bonds are the saf est investment on earth is that the .United States now 'possesses one third of thc world's gold. This has come about as a result of the war. It had large gold holdings before the .fighting began in 1914, but since then the nations of the earth have been forced to get needed supplies and maintain trade relations. The Federal Reserve banks do not "hold, probably more than two-thirds of this nation's supply or poid, yet they have in their reserves more than one-half as much as the State hanks of the next fourteen most wealthy na tions, and abroad the State banks have collected practically every gold piece that the people possessed. The Germans were holding a position at great cost to the allies. A detachment of British tanks was sent out to take the place. It failed. Then American volunteers were called for, and twenty tanks went over. Only six came back -but they took the position. That is the kind of stuff the Ameri- ; can troops are made of. It's got me. You have guessed it - Thrift - the yeast that swells the penny's size, that teaches us to make short shift of things in which ?no value lies. Each morning when I seek my job. I plunge at least for one Thrift Stamp; perhaps I buy it from a gob, perhaps it's from a baby vamp I do not care so long as they are working towavd the self-same end-for Thrift, the thing, which day by day informs us what we ought to spend. ?3><&<S><i><?<S><^$><S>^^ A New Ally for Prohibition. Why should not the Prohibition leaders of the country, in order to carry out to'its fullest extent the abolition of the saloon, take up the problem of a substitute .which must be put in its place? The Christian Herald believes that a substitute for the saloon can bc found. The most popular form of recreation today is the motion pic ture. It is callable of supplying the finest sort of argument against any attempted resurrection of the saloon. A questionnaire sent to a large number of leading motion picture ex hibitors throughout the country, with the view of learning the possible ef fect of Prohibition on that industry, produced surprising results. Seventy two per cent of the exhibitors ex pressed themselves heartily in favor of Prohibition, twenty-five per cent, were indiiTerent, and only three per cent, were opposed to Prohibition. The outcome of the inquiry is stated in these words: "The closing of the saloons removes the most formidabje competitor of the motion picture business." It is confidently expected that after July 1 motion pictures will leap into new popularity. There would seem to be a most providential opportunity here for the Prohibition forces to avail themselves of this powerful ally in the struggle that must follow their legislative vic tory, to maintain what they have fair ly won. The Prohibition Party could not do a wiser thing than adapt the motion picture to their purpose. The liquor interests do not want to stay dead. What chance of revival would they have if Prohibition were put into the schools, the meeting houses, the churches and Sunday schools on week days, the missions and every other available place motion pictures showing the wicked ness of the whole traffic which has just been abolished by national de cree? These would drive home the lesson in vivid, realistic, living illus tration. John Barleycorn would not have a leg left to stand on if his inglorious career were shown to the multitudes who would crowd to see real good mo tion picture films dealing with the sub ject. The film would thus become an irresistible advocate of national so briety and sound morals. We commend the suggestion to all friends of Prohibition, and especially to those who have been active in the late successful campaign.
