Good roads have twice saved France
in the present war, observes Farm and
Fireside. Had it not been for the radi
ating road system maintained by the
French government, the Germans
would have won the battle of the
Marne and reached Paris. The Ger
mans had calculated on only three di
visions being sent out from Paris to
-stop the invasion. Instead, the excel
lent system of highways made it pos
sible for fi.ve divisions to be sent to

this front. Again, shortly after the
battle of Verdun started, the French
railroad which was to furnish many of
the supplies to the troops was de?
strayed. The French government, how
ever, had a macadam road 32 feet wide
or, which four lines of traffic, two in
either direction, were maintained. Day
and night 1-1.000 motortrucks carried
men and equipment.
The traffic never stopped. When a
hole was : utde ia the road, a man with
a shovelful vi rock slipped in between
-the line? of trucks and threw the rock
into the hole, theft jumped aside to let
tlie truck roll the rock down. Then an
other man would follow his example,
and so on until the hole was filled.
Trucks that broke down were shoved
aside and repaired almost instantly.
Had the French depended on their rail
road or on poor highways the Germans
would have won the battle.
There are few places in which good
roads will win great military victories.
Eut there are many places in which
they will win great victories in time of
peace. Whenever a crisis-military,
economic or social-occurs in the life
of a community, the condition of tho
road is a significant factor in deter
mining whether the community will go
up or down, forward or backward. The
community with good roads is the com
munity that will deliver the goods
when the necessity comes.

Much misunderstanding seems to
prevail as to ibo means by which fed
eral aid in road building under the
federal aid road act of 191G may be
obtained, says a recent publication of
the United States department of agri
culture.
?"Many county officials and private
citizens." says the publication, "sub
mit to the department of agriculture
inquiries or applications looking to the
obtainjng of federal aid for a local high
way. To these inquiries and applica
tions the answer is invariably made
that under the terms of the federal
act itself the secretary of agriculture
may deal only with the state highway
department of roads. Responsibility
for repair of roads upon which fed
eral aid is to be expended rests with
the state highway department."

which, if capitalized at 5 per cent,
would represent an investment of $G,

Good roads are absolutely essential
to progressive farming and satisfying
country life. The best fanners can
not afford ) live where there are no
roads and no means of marketing
what they produce.

Treasurer's Notice.
The County Treasurer's office will
be open for the purpose of receiving
taxes from the 15th dav of October,
1918, to the 15th day ot March, 1919
All taxes shall be due and payable
between the 15th day of October,
1918, and December 31st, 1918.
That when taxes charged shall not
be paid by December 31st, 1918, the
County Auditor shall proceed to add
a penalty of one per cent, for Janu
ary, and if taxes are not paid on or
before February 1st, 1919, the Coun
ty Auditor will proceed to add two
per cent, and five per cent additional,
from the 1st of March to the 15th of
March, after which time all unpaid
taxes will bc collected by the Sheriff.

All the male citizens between the
ages of 21 years and 60 years, except
those exempt by law, are liable to a
poll tax of One Dollar each. A capi
tation tax of 50 cents each is to be
paid on all dogs.
The law prescribes that all male
citizens between the ages of 18 and
55 years must pay S2.00 commuta
tion tax. No communtation is includ
ed in the property tax. So ask for
road tax receipt when you desire to
pay road tax.

On Mogul and Titan Tractors
Nearly five thousand of our boys in khaki and blue
are coming back to work. We shall, of course, make
a place in our organization for every one of them, but
we wish to do it without throwing out of employ
ment the men who took their places and have worked
faithfully for us ever since. This is not going tobe so
easy for us as for some others, because the Govern
ment designated ours as an essential industry during
the war, and we actually increased the efficiency of
our organization after our boys left to join the
rank.
We can, however, give steady work both to our
present help and to the returning soldiers and sailors,
if we can bring about an immediate increase in tractor
production. In order to do this we must move for
ward to the farm some thousands of tractors that are
ordered for delivery at various dates up to May 1st.
and we shall also have to ship a large number of trac
tors that farmers intended to order later this season,
but could just as well take now. To those farmers
who are so situated as to he able to take advantage of

To those who will accept delivery of a Mogul or Tita i 10-20 on or
before March 8th we will give an Early-Delivery Discount of 5% from
the price of the tractor. (This amounts to $61.25 in the case of the
Titan 10 20 and $56.25 on the Mogul 10-20.)
After March 8th the following discounts will be given:
