County of Edgefield.
Whereas a petition haa been filec
and all legal requirements havini
been met, it is ordered that the reg
ularly appointed Board of Trustee
of Meriwether School District 13
do hold an election at Gardhervill
school house Saturday, June 1
1918, for the purpose of votinj
upon the question of levying ant
collecting a special tax ,of four (4
mills on the dollar of taxable proper
ty in said district, recently surveyed
proceeds of such special levy to b(
used for school purposes in South
Meriwether District 13.
At this election only such elec
tors as return real or personal prop
erty for taxation, and exhibit their
tax receipts and registration certifi
cates shall be allowed to vote.
Those favoring such levy shall
cast a ballot with the word
"Yes" written or printed thereon,
and those opposing such a levy shall
cast a ballot with the word "No"
written or printed thereon. The
polls shall open at 8 u'clock A. M.,
and close at 4 P. M., and in all
respects comply with Sec. 1278,
General School Laws of South Car

Winthrop College Scholarship
_and Entrance Examination..
The examination for the award
of vacant, scholarships in Winthrop
College and for admission of new
students will be held at the County
Court House on Friday, July 5, at
9 A. M., and also on Saturday, July
6, at 9 A. M., for those who wish to
make up by examinations additional
units required for full admission to
the Freshman Class of this institu
tion. The examination on Saturday,
July 6, will be used only for making
admission units. The scholarships
will be awarded upon the examina
tion held on Friday, July 5. Appli
cants must not be less than sixteen
years of age. When scholarships are
vacant after July 5 they will be
awarded to those making the highest
average at this examination, pro
vided they meet the conditions gov
erning the award. Applicants for
scholarships should write to Presi
dent Johnson for scholarship exam
ination blanks. These blanks, proper
ly filled out by the applicant, should
be filed with President Johnson by
July 1st.
Scholarships are worth $100 and
free tuition. The next session will
open Sept. 18, 1918. For further in

Closing Exercises of Edgefield
High School.
The following is a pogram of the
commencement exercises of the
Edgefield High School:
Friday evening, May 31st will take
place the annual celebration of the
McDuffie Literary Society. The pro
gram of this evening will con?ut of
a Declamation Contest and debate.
The subject for debate is: "Resolved
that South Carolina should have a
state wide compulsory education
law." This question is one of interest
and importance throughout the state.
On Monday evening, June 3rd, the
Eleventh Grade will give their play.
This will consist of a double bill,
two one-act plays. The first, "An
Alarm of Fire," the second, "The
Slacker." These plays are full of in
terest and action. These young peo
ple are being trained by Miss Annie
Clisby, and it is certain that those
who come will be entertained through
out the evening. An admission fee
of 25cts. for children and 35cts. for
adults will be charged. All money
taken in except the necessary ex
penses will go to the Red Cross. This
should appeal to everybody in town
and we should have a record-break
ing crowd.
On Tuesday evening the music
pupils of Miss Miriam Norris' mu
sic class will give their recital and
on Wednesday evening the graduat
ing exercises will be held. Six young
ladies will finish the course and be
granted diplomas. The graduates
are: Misses Neta Ouzts, Annie May
Culbreath, Lydia Brunson, Annie
Velma Cogburn. The annual address
will be delivered by Dr. Reed Smith
of the University of South Carolina.
Dr. Smith is a young and vigorous
speaker. No one should fail to hear
him.
All exercises will begin promptly
at 9 o'clock. The public is given a
cordial invitation. The war is occu
pying rightly the predominant place
in everybody's mind, but let us not
forget our school, a support of it is
strengthening the inner line of de
fence. The way to show your support
and your interest in your own boys
and girls is to attend their exercises.
