Presbyterians will use the Metho
dist church this Sunday. Service at

Everybody who has to travel now
is a good roads advocate. Even the
Fords are getting a rest.
Mr. J. Glover Tompkins, Jr.,
and Mr. John Mims have accepted
very desirable government positions
in Washington, D. C.
Miss Madge Turner is down from
Greenwood spending this week in
Edgefield. She has been very cor
dially greeted by her friends here.
By the time the local board com
pletes its work there will be three
old, worn-out, broken-down men in
the county who will have to be
pensioned.
It is very probable that if you
knew all of the whys and where
fores, you would sympathize with,
rather than criticise, the members
of the local board.
Mr. and Mrs. Manley Dobson?
now of Augusta, were welcome
visitors in Edgefield Monday and
Tuesday, spending the time at the
home of Mrs. Emma Dobson.
Mr. Charles Menafee of Greens
boro, N. C., now on duty at Camp
Jackson, was a guest in the home
of Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Jones dur
ing the early part of the week.
Senator B. E. Nicholson and
Representative X. G. Evans were
at home for the week-end and both
expressed the opinion that the leg
islature would complete its work in
about 10 da^s.
Mr. Clyde Jackson is having ma
terial placed on his lot in Bun
combe for the erection of a modern
cottage. It will be located near
where the Jackson residence was
burned something over a year ago
A new engine has been purchased
for the Baptist church and the
heating plant is now in perfect
order, consequently regular ser
vices have been resumed. Sunday
school and preaching at the regu
lar hours next Sunday.
Why is it that a man will spread
a blanket over his Ford and allow
his horse to stand out in very ee
y?re weather unprotected? It ap
pears that the heart of some peo
ple is in the wrong place-seems to
have gotten around to the right side.
Our young friend William II.
Ouzts has been accep'ed for service
in the aviation corps. He volunteer
ed and is here with his mother,
Mrs. Eva W. Ouzts. awaiting orders
to report to the training camp. Mr.
Ouzts volunteered rather than be
drafted.
Mr. Wiley Wells was in town
Monday and told The Advertiser's
representative that he has one field
of oats-six acres-left. They were
well fertilized and sown about the
middle of September. As a rule the
olde=t grain stood the severe weath
er better than that sown later.
Mr. Horace Cogburn is at the
throttle on our branch road for a
short time and has been very cor
dially welcomed by his Edgefield
friends. Horace is recognized as one
of the most efficient engineers on
the Southern road, having made a
first-class record from the outset.
Rev. and Mrs. J. T. Littlejohn
are now making their home in
Scranton, S. C., Mr. Littlejohn hav
ing accepted the pastorate of the
Baptist church at that place. Out
side of the cities, the Scranton
church is conceded to be among the
strongest Baptist churches in the
State. Success to these good friends
in their new field of labor!
Delinquent Registrants.
The local board locates several
negroes eveiy day who have failed
to get theirquestionnaires. Do you
know of any in your Community*/
If so, give their name and correct
address to the local board, so they
will not have to be reported to the
Adjutant General. Only a few
days remain in which these men can
fill out their questionnaires. Those
who are not located wiil forfeit
their right to claim deferred classi
fication, and will, as required by
the regulations, be placed in Class I
by the board. Every person who
registered knows that he should re
ceive a questionnaire, and if one
does not reach him, he should call
at the office of the local board.
Many colored people are under
the incorrect impressions that un
der the new food regulations gov
ernment inspectors will soon visit
their homes and seize all of their
meat and corn. White people
should allay their fear by inform
ing them correctly.
Box Party for Red Hill School.
There will be a box party for the
benefit of the piano fund at Red
Hill school house on Saturday night,
February 2, 1918. Everybody in
vited *o come and get a good square
meal. All girls bring boxes and all
boys bring money.
Meeting of Farmers.
All farmers desiring nitrate of
soda through the government who
have not yet placed their order with
the County Demonstration Agent
are requested to meet him at the
court house in Edgefield Saturday,
February 2, at twelve o'clock.

The Selective Service Regula
tions forbid the claiming of deferred
classification by registrants upon the
ground of matrimony if the marri
age relation was entered into subse
quent to May IS. lui7, the date of
thc enactment of the Selective Ser- j
vice Law. In order that all local ?
boards may act with uniformity in j
cases claiming deferred clarifica-1
tion upon this ground, all cases of
registrants who have married since'
May 18 will be appealed by the
Federal Appeal Agent.
Off for New York.
Mr. W. II. Turner left for New
York to purchase a large spring
stock of merchandise for The Corner
Store. He will spend some time in
the Metropolis in qutst of the new
est and best of the season's offerings
for the patrons of this popular store.
Miss Kate Samuel has gone to New
York also to make purchases for
the millinery and ladies' ready-to
wear department of The Corner
Store, She will ?tudy the spring
styles, bringing many new ideas
back with her. Miss Ruth Lyon
also accompanied Miss Samuel and
Mr. Turner, her mission being
largely one of pleasure.

The Woman's Christian Temper
ance Union will hold a business
meeting at the house of Mrs. J. L.
Minis next Monday afternoon, Feb
ruary 3, at 3:00 o'clock. Plans
will be made for a public celebra
tion of Frances Willard Day on the
17th, and a number of war service
activities will be planned.
All those who owe February dues
are requested to bring thom in.
Each member is requested to
bring scissors and a piece of un
bleached homespun, outing or other
new strong cloth for the arm and
leg bandages, a pattern of which
will be exhibited and the bandages
commenced. Thousands of these
are needed. Other ideas will be
presented for war work and the W,
C. T. T. U. service plans read.
