Just when to sell the young males depends on what your market demands. The Leg horn cockerels usually return the most profit when sold as broilers. The Rock, Red or Wyandotte may be held longer rr,? Splendid White Wyandotte. and marketed as small roosters. The farmer with an egg route, or milk route, finds that his customers will take many a broiler, ot rooster, if he works his market as he should. It ls one way to get the whole dollar of value, rather than get much less when the chicks are shipped to a distant city. FOOD AND DRINK ESSENTIALS Divided Into Five Important Classes Grain Feed and Water Are Most Important. The essential food and drink for poultry may be divided into five classes, as follows: First, grain food; second, vegetable food ; third, meat food; fourth, minerals in the form of grit and shell; fifth, plenty of clean water to drink. It may be useful to keep this divi sion in mind. It may be well also to ask oneself whether he is giving his flock all of the five classes of food and drink. All of the five are of first im portance. A flock can get along after a fashion without one or two of the five named, but not to very good ad Tantage. The best, most economical results will be secured by the use of all of the five classes. The first and fifth are the most important, doubt less. SIZES OF MARKET BROILERS Market Demand ls for Young Chickens Weighing When Dressed From One to Two Pounds. Broilers are young chickens weigh ing when dressed from three-fourths of a pound to two pounds. They are usually sold when sis to twelve weeks of age. The market demand is for broilers of three sizes: Squab broil ers weighing when dressed from three fourths to one pound each ; small broil ers weighing from one to one and one fourth pounds each, and large broilers weighing from one and one-half to two pounds each. At the age of six months the in creased weight is slight ?nd the qual ity poor. As the age of the cockerel Increases above twelve weeks the qual ity decreases materially. MARKETING CULLS IN FLOCK Give Surplus Fowls Week or Ten Days of Extra Care and Feed-Materi ally Helps Price. Cul? your flock as soon as possible and get the surplus off to market, but don't forget to give them a week or ten days of extra care and feed. This always pays big In the extra price you will receive. If you ship the fowls to a city commission merchant, sort out the ones of the same size and general appearance to put In each COO!. There is much in the good appear ance of market fowls. CHICKENS DELIGHT IN SAND Where Clean Boards or Trough Are Not Available Arrange Conven ient Box or Bed. Chickens delight in having the mn of a sand heap. If it seems imprac ticable to always feed on clean boards, or in feeding troughs, a sand box or bed, made of 12-inch boards and filled with sand, makes a clean place to feed. The droppings are quickly absorbed, and may be scraped off. The sand itself I? an aid to digestion. Com mercial grit will not altogether take the place of gravel with chickens.
