SEND COCKERELS TO MARKET
Pian to Get Rid of Males When They
Bring Best Prices-Hold Wyan
dotte for Roasters.
' The cockerels go to market when
?hey bring the best price. Just when
to sell the young males depends on
what your market demands. The Leg
horn cockerels usually return the most
profit when sold as broilers. The Rock,
Red or Wyandotte may be held longer

and marketed as small roosters. The
farmer with an egg route, or milk
route, finds that his customers will
take many a broiler, ot rooster, if he
works his market as he should. It
ls one way to get the whole dollar of
value, rather than get much less when
the chicks are shipped to a distant
city.
FOOD AND DRINK ESSENTIALS
Divided Into Five Important Classes
Grain Feed and Water Are
Most Important.
The essential food and drink for
poultry may be divided into five
classes, as follows: First, grain food;
second, vegetable food ; third, meat
food; fourth, minerals in the form of
grit and shell; fifth, plenty of clean
water to drink.
It may be useful to keep this divi
sion in mind. It may be well also to
ask oneself whether he is giving his
flock all of the five classes of food and
drink. All of the five are of first im
portance. A flock can get along after
a fashion without one or two of the
five named, but not to very good ad
Tantage. The best, most economical
results will be secured by the use of
all of the five classes. The first and
fifth are the most important, doubt
less.
SIZES OF MARKET BROILERS
Market Demand ls for Young Chickens
Weighing When Dressed From
One to Two Pounds.
Broilers are young chickens weigh
ing when dressed from three-fourths
of a pound to two pounds. They are
usually sold when sis to twelve weeks
of age. The market demand is for
broilers of three sizes: Squab broil
ers weighing when dressed from three
fourths to one pound each ; small broil
ers weighing from one to one and one
fourth pounds each, and large broilers
weighing from one and one-half to two
pounds each.
At the age of six months the in
creased weight is slight ?nd the qual
ity poor. As the age of the cockerel
Increases above twelve weeks the qual
ity decreases materially.
MARKETING CULLS IN FLOCK
Give Surplus Fowls Week or Ten Days
of Extra Care and Feed-Materi
ally Helps Price.
Cul? your flock as soon as possible
and get the surplus off to market, but
don't forget to give them a week or
ten days of extra care and feed.
This always pays big In the extra
price you will receive. If you ship the
fowls to a city commission merchant,
sort out the ones of the same size and
general appearance to put In each
COO!.
There is much in the good appear
ance of market fowls.
CHICKENS DELIGHT IN SAND
Where Clean Boards or Trough Are
Not Available Arrange Conven
ient Box or Bed.
Chickens delight in having the mn
of a sand heap. If it seems imprac
ticable to always feed on clean boards,
or in feeding troughs, a sand box or
bed, made of 12-inch boards and filled
with sand, makes a clean place to feed.
The droppings are quickly absorbed,
and may be scraped off. The sand
itself I? an aid to digestion. Com
mercial grit will not altogether take
the place of gravel with chickens.
