JOHNSTON LETTER. (Continued from First Page,) came singing was truly inspiring. They were led by Miss Mary Cul lum, leader at Batesburg who gave an illustrated Bible lesson from a specially prepared chart. Mrs. Hatcher's "Story hour for the chil dren" well held the attention of each one. In the evening the session was marked with much pleasure and in terest, and the choir of 14 rendered tru^y exquisite music. The demon stration by the students of Edisto academy was well arranged. The school is nearby and the students were delighted - to come. The mis sionary sermon by Rev. W. S. Brooke was one of the features of the meeting. Wednesday morning was taken up with the young people's societies, the Y. W. A., G. A., and R. A. The Leesville Y. W. A. led in gifts. The R. A.'s were delighted to have ?with them their state leader, Mrs. Carpenter, who addressed them. A playlet, "Building in His name," was held and a debate closed this session. The query was, Resolved: That there is greater need for mis sion work in our c-.vn state than in our homeland at large," Mrs. A. C. Jones, Mrs. T. H. Posey. The after noon session was lilied with various reports, adoption of associational policy and election of officers. Ward was selected as the next place of meeting and the following officers elected: President, Miss Sallie May Burdon, Batesburg; vice-president, Mrs. L. C. Latimer; secretary and treasurer, Miss Leila Attawav; Y. W. A. leader, Mrs. B. N. Bod ie; Sunbeam bands, Mrs. W. J. Hatch er. The hospitality of the good peo ple of Batesburg wras unbounded. Each day out under the shade trees at the rear of the church a bounti ful dinner was served. Everyone was seated and a plate of everything tempting with iced tea was handed each one. Later, waiters tilled with many kinds of cake and especially that kind of pound 'cake that is "all .wool and a yard wide" were hand ed. While waiting for the evening session the good people carried the visitors about over their beautiful little city in cars, and showed them many courtesies. On Saturday evening Mrs. Ben Lee Allen received a telegram stat ine that her brother, Mr. R. G. Coleman, of Greenville, had been fatally hurt in a fall from a train. Mr. Coleman was conductor on the Piedmont and northern railway and was coming into Piedmont when he leaned from the train to uncouple an air brake tube. He lost his bal ance and the rear wheels passed over his lower limbs with other in ternal injuries. A special train has tened him to Greenville where he was taken to the hospital but he lived only long enough to speak a few words to his wife and sister. Dr. and Mrs. Allen left for Green ville as soon as the news reached them. Mrs. Bettie Ready died here last Wednesday morning about 1:30 at the home of Mr. P. B. Waters, Jr., where she had .been making her borne for about a year. She was in ber Slst year.Mrs.Readyhad not felt well when she, arose Tuesday bul after breakfast her headache had passed and she decided to attend the revival services at the Methodist church, so after a short conversa tion with Mrs. Waters went to her room to dress. Later some of the family passed her room a nd seeing her sitting so quietly in her chair, thought she bad tired from the effort of dressing and was resting. She remained in this position so long Mrs. Waters went to her and found her unconscious. Medical aid was summoned but it was found that she had had a stroke of apoplexy and no hope was entertained from the first, of her recovery. She never regained consciousness. Mrs. Ready was a beau tiful Christian character and every one here loved her and always en joyed a talk with her for she waa always bright and cheerful. She will be missed by many warm friends. She leaves two sons, Dr. Lee of North Carolina, and Mr. Lee of Washington, D. C., these being children of her first marriage to Mr. Lee who lost his life on the bat tlefield of the .war between the states, also a sister, Mrs. Burnett, of Georgia. Of the immediate family is a step daughter, Mrs. Will Brad ford of Greenville who was Miss Mattie Ready, the youngest of the large family of children, and two nephews, Messrs. E. L., and W. D. Ready, and three nieces, Mesdames J. P. Bean, J. D. Watson and Miss Ida McMeekin. The interment was made on Wednesday afternoon at Spann's cemetery and her body was tenderly laid to rest beside the grave of her husband, the late Mr. Ready. There were many beautiful flowers placed upon ber casket. Little Miss Estelle Wright enter tained a number of her friends and playmates with a party on last Tues day afternoon, the occasion being her birthday and a very happy time was spent by the little folks as they had games out on the lawn and en joyed the swings. It was a real de light to watch them in their child ish sports. While resting from the games they enjoyed delicious Tutti Frutti cream and cake. Many pretty gifts were brought the little girl. .On last Mondav afternoon while Mr. Bob Price was covering a build ing, he fell and had the mis fortune to break three of his ribs Durinc the 6arae hour his son Mr. Artis Price was out in a car and during the time something went wrong with the gear. He had fixed it and was standing on the running board for a short while to see if the car was alright. The driver was at the same time examining some part of the car and suddenly struck one of the trees. The force knocked Mr. Price sevenl yards and he was un conscious for about five minutes, his only injuries being bruises. The driver was not hurt but the car sus tained injuriep. Mrs. Fletcher Wright was taken to the Baptist hospital in Columbia on Friday to be operated on for ap pendicitis. She leave? behind a lit tle babe of two weeks. Her many friends trust that she will 9oon be restored to her home;much improv ed. Mrs. F. S. Bland entertained the members of the We-are-twelve club on Wednesday afternoon and this coterie of friends passed two hours very happily for when one is enjoy ing themselves time goes on swal lows wings. Several tables of rook were enjoyed and later sweet music was had. The hostess assisted by Misses Elberta Bland and Orlena Cartledge served a delicious salad course with iced tea. CAN'T LOSE HAIR.
