RHODE ISLAND RED. FAVORED Latest Addition to List of Popular American ESreeds-Good Egg Pro ducers and Grow Rapidly. (By O. ERF.) The Rhode Island Red breed consti tutes the latest addition to the list of popular American breeds of chickens. This variety differs from the majority of breeds in claiming for themselves an origin biised solely on practical considerations. They are partly of Asiatic blood, "but in their selection, which extends over a period of fifty years, attention has been paid to rapid growth and egg production, so that the breed today more nearly resembles the Leghorns Single Comb Rhode Island Red Cock erel. than does either the Plymouth Rock or "Wyandotte. One fundamental dif ference stili exists that shows the Asiatic origin of the red chicken: .?They are persistent sitters. The Rhode Island Reds do not re produce themselves with certainty as to shade of color or style of comb, but in practical points they may be con sidered a distinct and well-established breed. GIVING CHICKENS SKIM MILK More Eggs Produced Than From Fowls Given Grain Ration Supple mented With Meat Scraps. According: to a general opinion of ! many who have given the matter ? much attention, the value of skim i milk to laying hens is from 70 cents tc^.$2.15 per hundred pounds. The latter i figure is evidently a little optimistic. | According to experiments conducted J by the Indiana experiment station, 51.73 was returned per hundred I pounds of skim milk purchased at 30 cents. These experiments covered a ? period of two years; one pen of laying hens received corn, wheat, oats, bran and shorts in the same proportion, in addition to all the skim milk the fowls j would drink, and another pen received only the grain portion of the ration that the former received. In averaging the results obtained from feeding these rations through two years of ex periments it has been shown that the average number of eggs laid per hen receiving grain and skim milk was 133.5 eggs, whereas the hens that did not receive skim milk with the grain ration produced an average of only 36 eggs per hen. It was also shown that during the winter months, December, January and February, when eggs are the highest in price, that the pen re ceiving skim milk produced seven per cent more eggs even than the pen re ceiving a grain ration supplemented with meat scraps, a feed generally recognized as a great egg producer. AGE FOR FATTENING CAPONS -Give Them All They Will Stuff of Cornmeal and Middlings-Fur nish Supply of Grit. Capons should reach full size be fore fattening, and this should be when they are from ten to twelve months old. Fatten them from two to three weeks before marketing-two if they are shut up in dark coops. Feed them all they will stuff of cornmeal and middlings, wet up, but not too ?wet, with milk. Cracked bits of glass are used as an aid to digestion, but good grit is safest where the ground stuff is used. Grit of some kind they must have. The farmer who does not keep over a lot of male birds as capons will lose a big spring profit on fowls, as turkeys do not at any time, sell as high as capons per pound. Dampness Causes Leg Weakness. Leg weakness in ducks is usually , ca?fcd by dampness. If a duck is ? compelled to sleep in a damp house , she is likely to be attacked with rheu matism or cramps, for which there is no sure remedy. Overfeeding will also do it. Sometimes ducks break down by persistent attention of heavy drakes. Place for Brood Coops. If poedible place the brood coopi near the cornfield, which furnisher both shade and fresh ground. GIVES VIEW OF COMMUNITY Plan of Chicago City Club ls to De velop the Neighborhood Spirit. In the small city or village nothing In particular is done ordinarily to stimulate the neighborhood spirit. That force grows and develops natur ally in a small community. People come to know one another without ef fort and easily retain their friendships and acquaintanceships. Thus is pro vided a substantial foundation for community interest, which is another name for neighborhood spirit. In a city of large proportions the community interest, the neighborhood spirit, is less apparent and less co hesive. There, is such an excess of humanity all about that unnatural barriers are anxiously thrown up against the making of friends too readily. Even neighbors living in the same apartment building remain strangers tor months on end. Yet a city like Chicago, if it is to es tablish the cohesive interest that fin-' ally produces community interest, I must develop somewhat in terms of j the neighborhood spirit. Out of this j comes the broader interest that em-1 braces the affairs of the whole city. This situation gives special value to the neighborhood center competition that ls about to be featured at the Chicago City club.* The purpose, as announced, is "to bring before the: public, in graphic form, the practical possibilities of enhancing neighbor hood life in our cities hy better, and especially better grouped, buildings1 and grounds for neighborhood activi ties." . This object is a particularly worthy, one. It lits In well with the public properties exhibition at the City club. ! By this means an opportunity is given Chicago citizens to obtain a clear Idea of what they own as a community then? schools, libraries, museums, streets, bridges, parks, playgrounds, : baths, police and fire stations,and so on. ?. The well-informed citizen should have definite knowledge of this "great j community estate" in which he is a ' stockholder. The exhibition and the j competition, with their Incidental meetings and discussions, should do much to establish a broader concept of these essential matters.-Chicago. News. The whole subject affords an inter esting illustration of the solidarity of scientific progress, and demonstrates forcibly thn fact that one advance in evitably brings another in its train.
