RAISING SQUABS FOR PROFIi Fancier Should Purchr.se Birds From Some One With Whom He ls Ferscnally Acquainted. Pigeons depreciate in value with age. They are considered to be at their prime when three years old, and there are very few pairs that pay for their feed after they are seven years old. Professional dealers in breeding stock have been known to buy these old pairs for from sixty to seventy five cents, and then sell them to the unsuspecting public as guaranteed mated birds (which they certainly are) at from two or three dollars a pair. Such birds, as a rule, will breed pretty well fer the first few months in their new quarters, but after that they are only a source of expense. For this reason a man should buy birds from some one with whom he is personally acquainted, or else from some person who is willing to give a guarantee not only as to the birds being mated, but also as to age. If they are mated birds there is no rea son wi:y a salesman should not fur nish particulars with them, giving the numbers on the leg bands, and if he has bred them, which most breeders claim to have done, he ought to be in position to give a fair estimate as to age, but as there is no way of verify ing tb is statement, the only safe plan is to buy young birds and mate them yourself. There are many varieties of pigeons that are used for squab producers, but probably the most common is the Homer. These are often crossed White Dragoon Cock. with Runts, Dragoons, Teals, Duch esses and Malte.se. The Runt is a very heavy bird. The Duchess gives a feathered leg squab, but has a tendency to increase the weight. TIME FOR DIGGING POTATOES Crop is Important One and Farmer Should Not Be Compelled to Buy Them for Table Use. Where potatoes are very dirty when taken from the field, some growers wash all the soil ofT them. Others maintain that it ruins their flavor and palatability. They are cer tainly far cleaner and more desirable to handle when the hose has been turned on them, and the clinging, hardened dirt washed off. If the ground is fairly dry when tney are dug. and if they are allowed to take the air and the wind for a while, they will usually be clean enough to do without washing. There is every reason for digging them dur ing such weather conditions. Potato digging should be made a sort cf an odd job. ene that can be done at any time when there is noth ing more preying t.o do. The potato crop ehedd be an important one, and any farmer v. ho i.s forced to buy po tatoes fur table use should look upon himself as temporarily disgraced. Enough petatees are spoiled every ye?r by careless digging to feed a city of the second class for twelve months. The style of animal which best meets the bacon curer's ideal has often been spoken about, but the de sired standard is net always reached, ar ;his in many cases is due to fauity breeding. To consider briefly one or two of the indications as to what is really a A Scrub Hog. good bacon pig, we might start first from the head. Here, length of snout, which partly includes length of jowl and th< ab sence of loose flabbiness so fre^ ent ly seen there, indicates as a rule a lengthy animal. The idea has been to reduce the cheap parts of the ani mal and to increase those which are dearer. On that account a light fore head is necessary, but lt must not be at the expense of width of back or depth in the pig. As a rule a pig narrow at the poll (between the ears) is not the widest on his top, nor is he the thriftiest of feeders. There may be exceptions to this rule, but it can be applied gener ally. The advantages of a prominent eye and a smooth unwrinkled jaw or cheek, as well as width between the eyes, are that they invariably Indicate a smooth, lean-fleshed animal. A short heavy head is invariably as sociated with a very round body and a wide and very fat back, altogether a wasteful carcass. The neck should not be too long, otherwise lt indicates weakness, and a short neck generally goes with a short side, which from the bacon point of view of course ls not desirable. It is important to note the character of the middle piece. The ribs should spring from the back, but they should not be entirely round. They should rather spring well and allow the animal to be turned out slightly fiat from the sides. There will then be less wasteful fat on the top without decreasing the depth bf the pig. What is wanted ls a pig that con tains a maximum of lean meat and an undercut with as much streaky as pos sible. The loin should, of course, be covered and muscular, because so much depends on good development there. The rump should not be too straight, otherwise the hams will in- j A Pure-Bred Animal. variably be short, ^here should be no flabbiness about he hams and a well-carried tail puts finish to a pig, which helps it greatly at the time of sale to the butcher. The quantity of bone should also be accompanied by strength of bone, be cause it is not possible to carry a heavy weight of meat of very fine quality without substance. Round bone should be avoided, ?is it indicates lack of breeding and is invariably as sociated with a fat carcass. The pasterns should not be weak and the pig should be straight on Its legs. This is likewise of great Im portance, for exercise ls necessary In the production of the best class of carcass. These may seem small points, yet they all Indicate particular functions which the bacon pig is supposed to fulfill. Commission Man Knows. Your commission man knows that a good fresh bird shows a well rounded form, with neat, compact legs and no sharp, bony angles on the breast, in dicating a lack of tender white meat That the skin should be clear color, yellow preferred, and free from blotches and pin feathers; for if It looks tight and drawn he will believe lt was scalded before plucking. That the flesh should give evenly and gently when pressed by the fin gers and should be neither flabby nor stiff. There is a medium in feeding which, as far as is possible, every one should follow. It gives to each animal just, wha* its system can readily as similate and make uso of; no more, no less.
