TOMORROW.
g T7"1NG H ASSAM, well-belov
^ J-^- ed was wont to say,
& When aught went wrong or
any labor failed,
"Tomorrow friends will be anoth
er day!"
And in that faith he slept and
so prevailed.
Long live this proverb? While
the world shall roll,
Tomorrow's fresh shall rise
from out the night
And new-baptize the indomitable
soul
With courage for its never
ending fight.
No one, I say, is conquered till
he yields;
And yield he need not while,
like mist from glass,
God wipes the stain of life's old
battlefields
From every moyiing that he
brings to pass.
New day, new hope, new courage!
Let this be,
O soul, thy cheerful creed.
What's yesterday,
With all its shards and wrack
and grief, to thee?
? Forget it then-here lies the
victor's way.

Judge Lindsay's Temperance
Declaration.
It is only within recent years that
I have determined to be a total ab
stainer, because I think it best for
my physical and moral health, and
because I wish to set a good exam
ple to others.
I believe that every boy and girl
should be taught to avoid liquor in
any form, as he would be taught to
avoid poison in any form. The
consumption of liquor, no matter
in how small a quantity, when ta
ken in the form of beer, wine, or
whisky, etc., is simply another
form of slowly poisoning the body.
I wish every boy in America
would keep the pledge to refrain
from intoxicating liquor of any j
kind or character as a beverage; to
do all in his power to end thc drink
habit of tho liquor traffic; and to
abstain from the use of tobacco in
any form.
I have been in the Juvenile Court
ten years, and in that time I have
had to deal with thousaneTs and
thousands of boys who have dis
graced themselves and their parents,
and who have brought sorrow and
misery into their lives; and I do
not know of any one habit that is
more responsible for the troubles
of these boys than the vile cigaret j
habit. JKO pure-minded, honest,
manly, brave, gentle boy will smoke
cigarets.
Ben B. Lindsey.
Condemn! Eradicate! Exter
minate!
Bishop W. F. Mallalieu.
These are three strong words, but
none too strong when applied to
the liquor traffic. The strangest
thing in all the world is that Chris
tendom does not rise en masse, and
do all that the three words signify.
The supreme enemy of the work
ing man is the liquor traffic. It
robs him of his hard-earned wages,
and gives him nothing in return.
When the leaders of the labor un
ions open their eye to the facts in
the case, they will find that the
grasping avarice of the worst com
binations is not to be compared
with the injury'wrought upon labor
by the malignant liquor traffic. It
may well be conceded that the time
is not far distant when organized
labor will demaud the condemna
tion, the eradication, the extermina
tion of the liquor traffic; and may
God speed the day.
Again, tf .is abominable traffic is
the enemy of the home. There is
enough of wretchedness and sorrow
incident to L worlel where none are
exempt from hardship, suffering,
pain and death, but the misery
brought into millions of homes
as the result of drink is the suprem
est misery that crushes and breaks
weary hearts and turns these homes
into gloomy, grief-filled, hopeless
caves of death.
Then, again, the liquor traffic is
the most persistent and deadly en
emy of the church of the living
God. It is the mission of the
Church and of Christianity to alle
viate human woes, to improve the
condition of life, to elevate the hu
man race, to enrich mankind, with
all good,to open before the poorest,
the weakest, the most forlorn and
sinful, the doors of immortal hope.
Who is there so utterly blind and
insensible a? not to see and know
that the liquor trailic increases and
embitters Luman woes. Drink is
the source c f the most aggravated
woes that afflict humanity. If it
were not for drink, half the woes of
earth woulel be done away with.
Surely, it is the grandest work of
the church to lay hold of those who
wander from the paths of righteous
ness, and lead them back to virtue
and peace. Or better than this, in the
very beginning of responsible child- i
hood, to hold them with the hand
of love, and guide their feet in the
way of holiness and save them from
the folly of sin. But, alas, and
alas, the saloon, the liquor trailic is
the foe of all this! It is. the liquor
traffic that ruins more precious lives,
and turns more men and women
away from the path of life unto the
path of death, than any other
?genoy. Why not exterminate this
outrageous business? Why not
sweep it from the face of the earth?
Why not rise in the name of our
God and make an end to this
som ce of destruction?-Pittsburg
Christian Advocate.

Step.
A woman with eight youngsters
boarded a Putney 'bus, which was
already comfortably filled.
The conductor became a trifle
impatient because it took the fami

mother finally reached the top step
the 'bus began to move, the con
ductor asked with the suspicion of
a smile:
"Are these all your children,
madam, or is it a picnic?"
"They are all my children," re
torted the woman with a grim
smile; "but I can tell you it's no
picnic."

* JOB'S
UNDERSTUDY
Moffatt, armed with a mirror, stood
by the bedroom window examining
a red elevation which had appeared
on bis neck, just below his right
ear. Hs .was so engrossed that he
did not hear the door open, and he
Btarted as his wife, close to his el
bow, exclaimed, "Franklin! An
other?"
He nodded gloomily, laying down
the glass and picking up his brushes.
"Well, I know exactly what to do
this time." Her voice, though not
.without sympathy, exhaled business
like satisfaction. "I talked it over
with Uncle Balley when he was here
yesterday, and he said he knew all
about Job's comforters-that's what
he called them. He say? all you
have to do ls to take a pound of shot
and cook it in a quart of milk and
drink the milk, and you'll never have
another. He's tried it three times."
"Not if I know myself, ni get
good and worse before I take that
dose. 1 think I'd better consult a
doctor."
"Oh, no! Try the simple home
remedies first. Bring home*8ome shot
this evening."
Deaf to wifely exhortation, Moffatt
persisted In his high-headed atti
tude until he started off for his day's
work. At about three o|clock, how
ever, he appeared at home with a
chastened look on his face and a
pound of shot in his pocket
"There's a new one starting on the
other side of my neck," he confessed.
'Go ahead and boll up the shot if
you want to, and then let's fix some
bread and milk poultices. *I've heard
of them all my life."
When he had gulped down the shot
flavored milk and was lying on the
couch, decorated with poultices, a
kind hearted neighbor ran la.
"Oh, *I know all ab?.ut itt" she
told him, after inquiring into his ali
ment. "I had 43-one after the other!
Nothing helped me-nothing."
"Mattie," Moffatt demanded next
morning, "do I look like your idea of
Job?"
"No, nor act like lt, either." But
she was sorry as soon as she had
said it
"There's another of these things
coming under my chin," be an
nounced. "There'll be a whole moun
tain range of tbam on my neck, from
ear to ear. I can't go to the office."
"Poor Franklin!" She soothed him
with a subtle tinge of elation in her
tone. "I've something new to try
an ointment that Cousin Sally told
me about I've had the druggist put
lt up. It smells dreadfully, dear, but
she says If you rub it In faithfully,
always with an upward motion, ifs a
certain cure. I'll rub some In before
breakfast"
"For pity's sake!" cried? Grandma
Worthington, when she walked In.
the morning after, and found Moffatt
still staying at home with his tribula
tions. "Don't fuss around with oint
ments, children! No nae paying oat
money to druggists for a thing: like
this. Dont you know what to** do?
Take the shells of three eggs and
mash them to a powder, then Swal
low one of them every morning for
three days running.
Outwardly scoffing, but secretly
hoping. Moffatt began to eat egg
shells. Three days passed, and the
only result of the treatment was that
a new and angry peak had added it
self to the chain which threatened to
encircle his neck.
"Franklin," said his wife, then, al
most timidly, "Mollie has been talk
ing to me all day about something
that hev?r falls, If a person only has
the grit to try it She knows per
sonally of twenty-nine cases that lt
has cured, but I haven't said any
thing because I was afraid you'd re
fuse."
"What Is lt?" growled Job's under
study, peering grimly from above a
widely bandaged neck.
She hesitated. "Suppose you try It
without*knowing what it is? It may
go down easier."
"Bring lt on!" was the desperate
order.
Hastening to the kitchen, Mrs.
Moffatt produced the remedy, al
ready prepared on the chance that
he might be induced to try lt It con
sisted of a piece of yello-r washing
soap, melted and mixed with an
onion which had previously been
bolled to a pulp.
"Mollie," said Mrs. Moffatt re
proachfully, when her laundress came
back to iron next day, "why didn't
you tell'me that medicine was an
emetic?"
"Wha's that, Mis' Moffatt? You
done tried it Emetic F Suddenly a
look of mingled horror and glee over
spread the black face. "Don' go fob
to tell me be swalluhed it!"
"Certainly! Aa much as you could
get on a 25-cent piece. That's what
you said."
"Oh, massy!" Mollie sank into a
chair and tried to look solemn. "Oh,
masy! That was to ruf awn, don'
you know? Laws! Whah'a Mistah
Moffatt now?"
Sh 3 peered about as if she ex
pected to see him stretched' under
the kitchen table.
"He has gone to the doctor." Mrs.
Moffitt's tone waa stern.
Again that gleeful horror convulsed
Mollie's face, which she covered with
her apron. "Don't worry, honey; he?l
get well," she declared, tumultuously,
through folds of gingham. ' "Doctahs
noh nuffln cayn't prevent lt Any
body 'at can' eat that dose an* Ure
froo lt-he'll get well!"
