Under the old law a dispensary could not be opened .' except by a majority vote of the land owners of a town. Now if a county votes to have thc dispensary, a majority of the board of control, two men, could open a dispensary lu any town in that county, if every man, woman and child opposed it. Was there ever a greater outrage perpetrated on a free people? This feature <->f the present law is enough to make any free man vote against the dispensary. There is not a man in South Carolina that advo cates the dispensary except fer the revenue that it brings. When he knows that the money comes from tte very poor, how can he suoport it? Did you note what a large num ber attended the educational rally at Saluda on August 10th? We are waking np on the school que.' tion. We have no dispensary. We are using only a small fraction cf the whiskey we used when we had a dispensary- Prohibition is coining. Surely the next legislature will give us state-wide prohibition. Robert B. Watson, Ridge Spring, Aug. 12. To the Editor of The State: Who should vote against thc dis pensary on August 17? I answer, ' Every man who advocated the dis pensary" as a step towards prohibi tion. It closed ^hundreds of saloons that ran day and night. And we were pledged to vote for prohibition when the dispensary was closed. Who oise? I answer, "Every man who Ul not so low that he is willing to make money to save taxes by se ling whiskey to the poor who need every dollar they can .earn to supply the xneeds of the families." Every one knows that the poor are the main supporters of the dispensary. Who else? I answer, and I would emphasize the answer, "Every man who professes to be a follower of the Lord Jesus." Every Christian man should stand where the great apostle of the? Gentiles stood when he said: If meat make my brother td offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend." If the drinking of wine is innocent in itself, I must refrain for ray brother's sake. v Who else? I can't mention a.ll in a short article.
