Very Pleasant Evening.
The. civic club annually takes
a summer rest, and before doing
so, doses up the year's work with
some special occasion, either of
pleasure or ph il an I h ropy, some
times both combined. This year
they chose a puraly social gather
ing, each member invitiug a
friend. On Friday evening this
assemblage gathered at the home
of Mrs. J. C. Sheppard, who is
pr?sident of the club, and set an
example to the younger genera
tion by remaining into the wee
small hours of the night. They
will have to be excused, however,
as they do not often have such
delightful opportunities for en
joyment and the hospitality of
the home is ali to blame. There
were two contests. A tablG on
which fifty objects were piaced,
stood in the hall, and each mem
ber inspected the table -for a few
minutes, then passed into the
library where they underwent a
memory lesson. Mrs. C. E. May
won the prize, a cut gl?98 dish for
remembering thirty-eight out of
fifty objects, The next was a tele
gram contest, each guest being
given a blank telegram on which
was to bo written "a message,
every word beginning with the
same letter. This was a very
amusing contest and a difficult
one.jj The prize, a scarf pin, was
won by Rev. P. P. Blalock, his.
message being written with the
letter I. Delightful refreshments
were served, and music was fur
nished by beautiful girls with
beautiful voices. Misses Rnett
and Maxcie Sheppard, Miss Mary
Lily Fisher and Air. Louis Wig
fall Cne?tham thus added gayely
and happiness to tho scene.
