of Dr. C. E. Burts before the col
lege Y. M. C. A. on Sunday morn
ing:
"Dr. Burts is one of the strong
est men graduated from Furman
university in the last generation
and his discourse yesterday made
a marked impression upon the
young meu of the university."
It is reported in the papers that
Capt R. G. Ross has been award
ed a large g3vernment contract at
Feruaudia, Fla., and that he will
re-open one of his quarries near
Columbia. Having filed bids for
several other large government
contracte, it is withiu the range of
possibilities that he will re open
the Parkhill quarry. For work to
be resumed at the quarry during
the dull summer months wou'd
mean much to Edgefield snd

contained the following news item
from its Johnston correspondent
that will be read with deep inter

'"The social event of the coming
week will be the marriage of Miss
Ida C. Norris and Mr. M. R.
Wright, that takes place at 6:30
p. m., June 10th in the Baptist
church. The bridal party will be
entertained the evening preceding
tbe marriage at the hump of the
bride. The bridal party will con
sist of about 25 and the event is
looked'forward to with much in
terest as the contracting parties
ire exceedingly popular."

C., held a very enthusiastic meet
ing on Wednesday,Juno 3rd,at the
home of Mrs. Dr. J. G. Tompkins,
the occasion being a celebration ot
the 100th anniversary of the birth
of Jefferson. Davi?. The program
consisted of patriotic music &$tt
the reading of sevt ral valuable
papers. As the chapter has eighty
odd dollars in its treat-ury, au or
der will be placed at once for the
monument that is to be erected
iu the Edgefield cemetery over the
unmarked graves of Confederate
soldiers. M?SB Eliza Mims has
been engaged to paiut badges for
the m^mbers of the chapter to
wear on public occisious.

We bave heard of some ladies
in Edgefield county \yho have pur
chased hats this season that cost
nearly halt a hundred dollars bur
a certain North Carolina milliner
has a "mnrry widow" that sur
passes them ?all. An exchange
describes it as follows:
"A $650 hat was shown at the
spring opening of a millinery es
tablishment at Lexington, N."C
Tt was a Merry Widow shape made
af white silk lace and bordered
with straw. The crown was high
and the brim, of course, was very
wide. Around the crown were ten
$50^old certificates, so arranged
as to make an effective trimming.
Other decorations were a paradise
aigrette end twenty-seven ?5 gold
pieces arranged in a band around
the crown The bat is kept in the
Bank of Lexington at uigbt, as it
is considered too va'uable to risk
loaviug in the store."

If anyone, white or colored
kuc we of a "free" negro they will
confer a favor by sending his or

office. What we mean by a ".free"
negro is one who was set free,
given his freedom by his caster,
during the reign of slavery. Soou
after the war there were a few
"free" negreas scattered over the
country but nearly all of tbem

Those who failed to witness the
children's entertainment, "'Tots in
Toyland", at the Academy of
Music on Thursday night missed
quite a treat. Mr. Tom Stuart, the

The beloved wife of Mr. B. L.
Stevens passed away at her home
one mile above Meeting Street on
Monday morning at. eleven o'clock.

Very Sudden Death.
Mr. Joseph J. Hollaud died on
Sunday night of heart failur*,
having been Bick less then half au
nour. He ??d a similar attack
some months ago and was quite
sick for a time but had entirely
recovered. Mi. Hollaud is very
kindly spoken of by his neighbors,
those who knew him best, as being
a mau of very generous nature,
always obliging and accommo
dating, often at his own loss.
<Hewa8 the youngest son of tbe
late Bennett Hollaud. The inter
ment took place Monday after
uoou in the Stevens burial ground,
near the home of the lamented
Capt. W. L. Stevens. It was there
that many of Mr. Holland's rela
tives were buried.
