Beginning with July 1st, the salary of Capt. VV. H. Bruneon will be raised from $1,400 to $1,500 per annum. Messrs. Will Celebrate Thirtieth Anni vcr sary. "Q.ri the morning of the 3rd Sun day, June the 16th, the members of the Pr?t by terian church will celebrate thu 30th anniversary of the founding of their church in Edgefield. The church was orgaui z?d on the 28th of May 1877, th charter membprs being Mrs. Dr J. W. Hill, Mr. S. H. Manget Mrs. R. S. Anderson, and Miss Ei ta Ransford, now Mrs. J. B Norris of Columbia. Rev. S. L. Morris who was pas tor of the church for seveu years from 1882 to 1889-will be pres ent and take a prominent parkin the celebration. Rev. Mr Morris is now chairman or the Presbyte rian Home Mission Board and is located in Atlanta. This celebra tion will be an important event in the religious lifer of our com munity and will be pleasantly looked forward to by scores who do not belong to the Presbyterian fold. Several years ago the. residents of Salnda of the Presbyterian per suasion organized themselves into a church, and while their mern bersbips is limited they have always beeD very loyal and faith ful. Rey. T. P. Burgess, who is one of the most lovable pastors our town has ever known, goes up and conducts, religious services for them every first Sunday even ing. He filled his regular Saluda appointment on Sunday evening last. Council Renders Substantial En couragement. As Adjutant and Inspector General Boyd enlisted the Edge ?eld Rifle Company upon condi tion that the town assist iu pro viding an armory for storing the <?u UB and equipments, Capt. B. R. Tillman appeared before the coun cil on Friday afteruoou and sub mitted the matter as the repre sentative of the company. He sta ted among other thing that the Edgefield Rifles would be ready at auy time to protect the lives and property of the town and that even in cases of fire the men would ren der valuable service. After behr ing this request from Capt. 1 ill man, the council, without a dis senting vote, adopted a motiota agreeing to pay the rent of the ar mory for the first six months, which will amount to $60. Stay in the Country. On Sunday afternoon R3V. Mr. Kiuard preached to the colored people, and during the course of his remarks said many good things vhich if put iuto practice by his hearers will contribute to their temporal and eternal welfare. His thorne wa?, "Six days then shaU jabi r." The speaker urged tbe colored people to remain in the country on the farms instead of 'noviug to the towns, stating that nine-tenths of those who move to the town becoao? idlers aud loaf ers. The most thoughtful colored people realize the truth and time liness of this admonition. The fact is, the most prosperous colored people do uof. flock to the towns on Saturday afternoons to loaf and gossip, but remain at home and work as hard aud as late on Saturday as on Monday. Death of Col. John R. Tompkins. The friends of Col. John R. Tompkins eau scarcely realize that bis eyes have been closed in eter nal sleep and that bis familiar form will be seen no more among us. ^or some years it bad been his custom to spend bis summers in Edge?ald among relatives and lifs-long friends who always greet ed, him most affectionately. Al though he left the county of his nativity in early manhood and sought his fortune in Mobile, Ala., be was always devoted, loyal and true, to Edgefield county. Noth ing ever gave him more genuine pleasure than to mingle with tho people of his old home. Col. Tompkins* magnetic per sonality, amiable and gentle man ner, kind and generous nature, always drew men to bim, and caused him to be honored, esteem ed, beloved, wherever he went or was known. He possessed unusual strength and breadth of mind, and was not only . a statesman and juriet of renown but ivas also well versed in literary lore. Col. Tompkins was first mar ried to au Alabama lady, from which union three children sur vive him. The F.inard Gospel Tent has been pitched in ?dg?field for ten days, and the preaching of the gospel and the splendid choir sending forth the songs of Zion on the-morniirg. and evening air are drawing hundreds of people from far and near besides the hun dreds who aie attending for the love they bear the great cause there.represented. Hundreds are praying for a great blessing on the town and county of Edgefield. Sunday .morning and evening the tent was overflowing. On Sun day evening Mr. Dunaway preach ed a Bermon which for force and effect has never been equalled in Edgefield. His denunciation of sin was founded on the interpre tation of it in the Sermon on the Mount, as proclaimed by the Sav iour himself dealing especially with murder, lust and profanity in all their baarings, and as heart sins as well as outward acts. Sun day afternoon was given to the colored people, when a large crowd of appreciative people were pres ent listening to a practical ser mon by Rev. Mr. Kinard, the text being "Six days shalt thou work.'' ? The Magic No. 3. Number three is a wondeiful mascot for Geo.
