The copy bearing the last named is more than sev enty years old, having been print ed only two years after the paper was founded. It is really surprising what very marked improvements can be made on a farm in a short time when a thoroughly business-like man takes hold of it. The vTritor had not passed this farm for several years before last Saturday,- Consequently we were agreeably surprised at the great chauge that had been wrought. The "Old Reliable" Penn Store. The Penn drugstore is probably the oldest mercantile business iu the state. We have before us a copy of The Advertiser dated March 2ud, 1837, which ccnlains a copartnership notice that marks the fouudiog of this business by Mr. G. L. Penn, father of the present prcprietor, Mr. W. B. Penn. Eight years later, in 1845, the drug department was added. According to these dates, the cor rectness of which cannot be ques tioned, the grocery department of the Penn store was founded more than 70 years ago aud the drug business 62 years ago. For the quality of its ' merchandise and for honest, upright methods "in conducting its business t!.is stor-i has beeu without a peer all of these years. Mr W. B. Penn bas had folb charge of business for more than thirry-five years. General Regret Expressed. Since it became known soc.e days ago that Miss Elizabeth Bryson Nicklee and Miss Carrie Ross Williams would not return to Edgefield as members of the S. C. C. I. fac-.ilty for the next seseiou, expressions of keenest regret have been beard on every baud. Since coming to Edgefield four years ago, Miss Nickles has uot only bepcrpe a part of the pol? lege l ut a part of the community at large also. It is true that M ?SB Williams bas ouly been in Edge field one persiop bpt in that f-bort time she has greatly endeared herself to all of our people, es pecially to hose who knew her best. The places of these two very talented young ladies will be diffi cult to fill. While lameutiug their departure we are rejoiced to be able to announce that Miss Hat tie - .Jfewsom am] Mies. Minni Dicks will return. Two truer, nobler or more faithful teachers than these cannot be found. R. F. D. Service a Great Blessing. On Saturday last the writer wit nessed a practica! demonstration of what a great boon the rural free delivery service is to those who live'some distance from the post office. While the people of the Horn's Creek neighborhood were gathered at the churoh on Satur day last, enjoying an ideal Sun day school picnic, the "R. F. D." carrier passed about one o'olock, leaving mail for probably a dozen persons. The farmers got the mar ket reports, the ladies their fash ion magazines, the boys tbeir base ball news and the young ladies tbeir long-looked-for letters. The morning papers were placed into the bauds o? the subscribers re siding five or six miles from the railroad almost as early as they BLT J received in many uf the towns. Owing to the improved mail facili ties, tb9 people of tho rural disr tricts read more and are batter in formed on the current topics and issues of the day than formerly. Sunday School Picnlq. Horn's Creek church was found ed in 1768 and is the oldest church in the Edgefield association, being loo*-<>d upon aB the old mother cl. ' . Dr. C. E. Burls is pastor this flock, preaching every _cond Suuday afternoon. Con nected with the church is a flour ishing Sunday school whose faith ful and very efficient superin tendent is Col. S. B. Mays. In order to give diversion, and in crease the interest nf the young people, the officer* of the Horn's Creek Sunday school pon?eiyfd the idea of holding a picnic. S?U urday last was the day set for this delightful social opr.asion. Several nundred persons from the neigh borhood and some visit.irs from a distance gathered on the hallowed grounds of old Horn's Creek and passed an exceedingly pleasaut d;. Unlike the laTge military picnic*, everybody knew everybody else present, so the hour6 passed rapr idly by as pleasant social in tercourse was eugaged in. In quality, it was fit for a king, and in" quantity, it would nave almost fed the king's array. Our very kind friend, Mrs. John F.
