Enforce The Vagrant Law.
Criminal assaults upon helpless
women are becoming alarmingly
frequent-three in South Carolina,
within ten days. Lyu ching, which
is almost invariably the sequel of
such crimes, seems not to prevent
them. What, then, must be done?
Are we to t-tand supinely by and
not prot-ct our defenseless women
agftiust fiends . in human form?
The suggestion of a mounted rural
ppHc'j aa a means of preveutiou
has baen made, also the arming of
girls and w.iraen for sslf-d^fei^}.
It has been fu iher .-unsted that
a better enforcement of the vagrant
law would greatly reduce all crimps
We believe the latter to be the
most practical suggestion yet
made. As a rule, the law-abiding
citizens are thosa who are regular
ly employed, ?while, on the other
hand, the criminal element, of any
community is composed of persons,
both white and colored, who are
idlers, loafers, vagabonds, who
work only when dire necessity
forces them to. Put the idle,
floating element to work and all
crimes will diminish. There
should be some concert of action
along'this line among the white
people.
The Election Over.
The election is over. And thank
God for it-we Eay this reverently..
The campaign just closed in this
county., owing - to tjieiheated^con
-^?gB^^^f^'-T?^K?ra^est' - vote
that has been cast since the dis
memberment pf the old county,
was polled on Tuesday.
We publish the- vote in tabula
ted form, and while it may not be
entirely accurate-LO absolutely
correct statement being possible
till the official count, is made
yet we believe no error will be
found sufficiently large to change
the result.
According to the returns sent
in, there ?ill be only two second
contests in the county offices. Mr.
D. P. Self and Capt. J. R. Block
er will make a second race for ;
County Supervisor, and Messrs.
R. C. Griffis and W. E. Turner
will run again for County Com" 1
missioner.
As to the congressional race:
Very meagre returns hav6 been
received from over the district.
Congressman Patterson leads by- a ,
comfortable majority in this
county, is second in Saluda, and
carries Barnwell, Beaufort and
Bamberg counties by large ma
jorities. He may be elected on
firBt ballot.
At this writing (Wednesday
afternoon) no definite informa
tion can be giv6n as to the state
officers. Ansel leads for governor
by a good majority, with Manning
second. Lyou .received tremendous
vote in many sections of the state,
may be elected on first ballot.
Unnecessary Expense.
