We notice through the papers
that, come to our desk from every
section that some towns have fi
per capita dog tax of oue dollar,
requiring every dog to wear a
badge. If all the dogs in Edgefield
were taxed one dollar per .head it
would serve two good purposes.
Besides pu! ting a goodly sum in
the treasury which could be ex
pended in public improvement, it
would rid the commuuity of a
worthless class of curs that are a
menace lo every man, wom:ui and
child in the towu.
. Throughout the spriug months
and thus far iuto the summer,
Edgefield bas been a very healthy,
town. None can be found with a
better record. Now, if every home
owner will look after the cleanli
ness of his premises, using lime
freely, we see no reason why this
good record cannot be maiutamed
throughout the remainder of the
summer. B?ar in mind that a lit
tle precautiou may ward off much
suffering and anxiety, not to men
tion the hervy expense incident
to protracted illness. .
Rev. William Aiken Kelly, who
disappeared so mysteriously about'
two yean* ago while pastor oe the
Methodist church at North Au
gusta, has recently been operated
upon in the hospital,in Charleston
for braiu trouble, and has been
fully restored to his normal cou
dilion. It was fouud that pressure
upon the brain caused tbe mental
aSerration under which Mr. Kelly
has been laboring. His complote
restoration is very gratifying to
mau}' persons throughout the
state. He ranks ameng the bright
net young ministers of the Metho
dist Conference.
Be constantly on the alert these
days for mad dogs, and if your
dog has b?en bitten by a suspi
cious dog do not take any cbauges
but have it killed at once. Several
mad dogs have passed through
Edgefield recently. The Ia6t one
appeared on Sunday morning and
was given a hot chase by Mr. Toe

race track, -from the candidates
for'Congress down to those who
want to weigh Edgefield's 8,000
bales of cotton next fall, will be
on hand in their best bib and
tucker. There will be speech
making galore. on this occasion.
Some of the candidatos,- we hoar,
are already practicing their ora
tions and expect to make- the
welkin ring.
Capt, R. B. Cain, who. is Bti 11
writing his share of iusurance,
stopped over in Edgefield for sev
eral days last week. While here he
procured a copy of the recently
enacted license ordinance ol the
town of Edgefield to send to bis
company, which, , he states will
pay the license without raising the
slightest objeotion. Capt. Cain
says that a great number of towuf
requiro a license. In some the
amount is as high as $30, while in
Edgefield the liceuse will not ex
ceed one-third of that amount.
Death of a Gallant Veteran.
The very sndden death pf Mr.
Eb. H. Reynolds on. Weduesday
morning, July 11th. was a greal
shock to our commuuity. For
some time previous Mr. Reynolds
had beeu quite sick but had ap
parently recovered. The iutermenl
took place at Gilgal on Thursday
morning, the Rev. C. E. Burts
officiating at tbe funeral.
The deceased was one of the
oldest raemberB of the old and
honored Reynolds family which
bas been for many, many genera
tions prominently identified with
the affairs of the county, especial
ly of the West-side.
Mr. Reynolds was not ouly a
useful citizen in times of peace
but during the entire four years
of the Civil War he fought bravely
for his country. He enlisted in
Capt. T. C. Morgan's company.
The demise of this good man re
moves from our midst a devoted,
tender and affectionate father and
a sterling citizen. He is survived
by a wife, who was Miss Martha
Cochr?n, and seveu children, to
ali of whom we extend deepest
sympathy.'
