The people of Aiken do not take
favorably to the county court in
novation. In the recent election
held in that ccunty to determine
whether or not such a court should <
be established, the vote was ex
cel dingly light, the majority ot
those .cast being overwhelmingly
against the couuty cpurt.

out of dispensaries and then
crowded their co'umns with ad
vertisements from liquor dealers.
This newspaper has been, is now,
and ever shall be against the sale
of whiskey in every form, conse
quently we do not publish liquor
advertisements. Should we do so
we would be grossly inconsistent.
In order to close out odds and
ends and sundry hard stock pur
ctased by the old board, the new
dispensary board has decided to
. establish a cut-rate, at-cost, bar
gain-counter dispensary in Colum
bia. The windows will doubtless
contain placaids containing-the
- following tq lure the passerby :

now 99 cts;" ' "Boykin's Best, for

the heavy rush of fertilizers to the
interior is over, the tag tax con
tinues to grow day by day. The

The trade among our merchants

We are not v surprised that cash
. trade should fall off among your
merchants. How about the hard
earned dollars that flow so freely

of dollars were divided among the
merchants of your town? This
money would.enable them to dis
. couut many bills and tide them"
over many a "tight" place. Be
sides, those who now purchase
that which damns them, body and|
soul, would iwtpad purchase th*
necessities-and perchance a few

children. Close the dispensary
doors,.and trade along other and
more legitimate lines will "pick
up" surprisingly. -Such is the
actual experience of our Edgefield
? merchants. We have their word

A good business man suggests
that the town organize an insur
ance company. This town has
. paid out in twenty years, perhaps
$200,000 in policies, while in that
!' time the'losses have been next to
nothing. Our banks are success
* ful, and,we are quite sure that a
fire insur?nce company properly

the Town of Edgefield : I desire
to thank the Democratic voters
who sustained me in the election
for mayor of the town of .Edge
field on last Saturday. I appreci
ate their vote very highly indeed,
especially as I received a majori
ty of the Democratic votes polled.
While the returns show that
"MB vote was, for Mr. Adams, 93
and myself 91, it seems to be a
fact that three of the ninety three
received by Mr. Ada-ns were those
of one white Republican and two
negro Republicans. It will thus be
seen that while I received th<j
majority of the votes of the Demo
crats, thoee three Republican
votes defeated the will of the
Democrats of the town, and they
will have a mayor for the next
two years who was defeated by a
majority of the Democrats who
voted on last Saturday. It is not
my intention to place the blame
of that condition of affairs on Mr.
Adams personally ; but, it is my
aim to show that the will of the
Democrats of the towu has beeo
defeated, and that I, as their
choicerwas in that manner defeat
ed for the mayoralty of the town.

for their supoort. I grieve with
them that the will of the majority
of the Democrats of the town has
