Upon .reading the daily papers,
in which are published so many
letters and speeches that savor of
politics, one very naturally asks
himself this question: Is this,
after all, really an "off year" iii
politics ?
If you know of parents who have
under consideration the matter of
scuding a son or daughter off to
.?ollege this fall, suggest the South
Carolina Co-Educational Institute
to them. Its past record proves
that it is worthy of their patron
age.
If au individual can be a mem
ber of the dispensary investigation
committee au J represent a manu
facturer of beer at the same time,
why could not the Governor be at
the head of the dispensary and
represent the liquor trust at the
same time ? The latter would not
be any more inconsistent than the
former.
If the dispensary continues
much longer, with its debauching
and corrupting influence not only
the office of liquor and beer dis
pensers will be bought and sold
but every other office in the State
from Governor down. Especially
will this b* the case if the Gover
nor is to be made the head of the

that are known as "dispensary
.counties" are those which have
large towna and cities that can
carry an election tor the dispensa
ry. The country people see what
great demoralization is being
wrought by the system, hence their
determination to vote it out.
The Old Knights Suffer.

Knights of Honor assessments for
the age of seventy and upwards,
which is to become effective on
September the , 1st, will work a
great hardship upon tho members
who have for years borne the brunt
of the order. Many of the faith
ful old Knights will be forced to
discontinue their insurance-at a
timejwhen they most need the pro
ection-because they will be un
able, with their earning capacity
almost nothing, to pay the in
creased assessments. This decree
of the supreme lodge will cause
not a few of the old members to
drop from the ranks before death
summons them, losing all or near
ly all of what has been paid.
Younger members will also sur
render their policies before they
are confronted with the same seri
ous condition, profiting by the un
fortunate experience of their
seniors. We are informed that
the new decree will fall heavily
upon several members of 1he Edge
field lodgf, having to forfeit the
policies which they have made
many sacrifices to carry.
Statement by County Supervisor.
For fear of the public being
misled by the recent report of the
grand jury as to the financial
standing of Edgefield county, I
deem it only fair and just to the
board of county commissioners
that I be allowed to make a state
tmet of some facts omitted by the
grand jury in their report.
While they tndertook to Bhow
to the public the available funds
for the year 1904, and endeavored
to create the impression that a
part of the funds for that year
were expended to pay the past in
debtedness of the county, I now
state as a fact that none of thc
. ..funds for the current expenses
went to pay any past due claims ;
but ou the contrary when a settle
I ment was made with Mr. C. M.
Williams, the then county treas
urer, it was found that he had on
hand, and in the banks, $2312 81
' from the collections of 1903, which
was to pay claims of 1903; and in
addition to the $2312.81 the \ mill
levy for past indebtedness collec
ted in 1904 amounted to about
$1650.00, and the ? of dispensary
ME?
profits which also was to be ap
plied to past indebtedness amount
ed to $1633.47, making in. the ag
gregate the sum of $5596.29, which
sum, or as much of it as was
! necessary, was checked out by the
j Supervisor to pay past due claims
I as the law directs that he shall do.
Furthermore, it is only fair that
the people of Edgefield county
should know *hat had Mr. Wil
liams filed the treasurer's report
with the supervisor of mouey ou
hand and to the credit of the
couuty of the 1st of October 1904,
the October claims would ha,\e
been paid iu cash and none of
them would have been discounted,
for there was at that tim: about
$3400.00 in the bankB to the
county's credit, but the supervisor
not having any notice of this
amount being on hand, he ol
course drew no warrants to pay
the claims audited in October.
I only make thiB statement that
the people of Edgefitrld county
may know the true status of affairs
in the Supervisor's office, and it-is
gratifying to me to further state
that the county owes nothing ex
cept for currerjt expenses. If any
mau questions my statement, be
can have free access to the books
aod papers iu the Supervisor's
office that a statement of these
facts may be proveD.

We met Prof. Euizminger some
days ago and he told us that a
large percent of the old students
would return to the S. C. C. I
this fall. That is good. Edgefield
county ought to have each year
one huudrad of her boys and girl s

daughter. Bro. Burts and his
charming wife were at Rehoboth
last week. We all were delighted
to have these good people with u?.
Bm. Buits preached twice a day
from Monday to Thursday. Grtat
crowds attended each service. We
believe much good was accom
plished.
Dr. J. D. Pitts, of Laurens, is
with Bro. Littlejohn this week-at
Red Hill in a meeting. Dr. Pitts
has been pastor ot the fir6t Baptist
church at Laurens for twenty five
years. He is one of the best
preachers of our state. Our people
are delighted with bis preaching
and no doubt good will be done:
Soon our association will meet
-the 5th of September. We hope
that all of the churches will ap
point delegates and see that they
attend the association. We are
looking forward to a great meeting
at Edgefield. Let all go up to the
